Kitchen is a mix of classic and modern styles with the island in a concrete flat door and the U shape in Hartforth Blue shaker. The Silestone worktops are in Bianco River which works really well with both the door finishes. The space was a major change from the original layout with the backdoor being blocked in and the creation of an island with seating on end and side.

This bespoke family kitchen was part of the renovation of a period home in Frome. The ground floor is a half basement and struggled with dark rooms and a layout that did not function well for family life. New windows were added to the adjoining dining room and crisp white finishes and clever lighting have transformed the space. Bespoke cabinets maximised the limited head height and corner space. Designed in a classic shaker style and painted in Hopper by Little Greene with classic burnished brass ironmongery, it is a timeless design.

The Brief This Worthing client sought a stylish upgrade on their previous kitchen, swapping an old monochrome kitchen for something a little more colourful. As well as a new theme, it was also up to designer Phil to incorporate a traditional element to match the style of this property, incorporating useful storage options. This client was also looking for a full flooring improvement which would help to integrate a dining and seating area into this vast space. Design Elements To suit the space designer Phil has created a great layout which incorporates all the elements of this project brief, with the bulk of amenities centred around a range cooker. Extra storage is provided in tall units that run all the way towards the dining and living area of this property. The theme is comprised of Virginia shaker furniture from British supplier Mereway in colours sea mist and pebble grey. Traditional features have been included in this project in the form of a butler style sink and herringbone flooring from Karndean. The flooring has been fitted by our expert team, and runs throughout this whole space to create a luxurious feel. The chimney breast surrounding the range looks original, but has been built out by our installation team to add a further traditional element. Phil has added further storage either side of the range in the form of discrete cabinetry. Special Inclusions A key part of this design was creating a communal feel in the kitchen. To accomplish this, great care has been taken to incorporate the seating and dining area into the design making the vast room feel connected. To add to this element a peninsula island has been included with space for three to sit. Around the kitchen, solid quartz surfaces have been opted for, with Silestone’s lusso finish nicely complimenting the theme of the space. Project Highlight To integrate the required storage, designer Phil has used a number of clever solutions to provide organised and maximised storage space. An impressive pantry is built into tall units, with corner units and a pull out pantry also in the design. Feature end unit storage provides a nice place to store decorative cook books. The End Result The end result is a kitchen and dining space the ticks all boxes. A great design incorporates the traditional features, storage requirements and extra inclusions this client desired to create a wonderful kitchen space. We chose a flat, matt laminate door in a pale grey with matching grey cabinets. The tall larders surround the American Style fridge freezer, housing all food storage at one end of the kitchen. The main worksurfaces with the large sink, Quooker Flex boiling tap, dishwasher and pull out bins, provide ample space for food preparation and the open shelf above keeps all essential accessories easily accessible. Tall cabinets at the end, housing the single ovens and multipurpose storage, balance the overall look in the room without being overpowering so near the dining area. The island is that central hub with bar stool seating, allowing for comfortable conversation while the meal is being prepared or a quick snack. Plenty of deep drawer storage below for all pots, pans and cutlery keep them in that central zone. The beautiful, veined quartz worksurfaces, including book matched end panels on the island, bring that touch of luxury and detail which compliments the grey green paint used on the accent wall. The kitchen accommodates a full set of Neff appliances, and an Air Uno vented hob. We also installed this Ceasarstone Quartz worktop, and behind, metro style tiles to the splashback in teal, to add a pop of colour against the white cabinetry. We also exposed the original metal beams which became a feature of this apartment.

We love this inset handle Shaker kitchen in Essex. It has plenty of worktop and prep space and a large amount of storage. The range, fridge freezer and sink are at a close proximity to each other, and there is even more storage on the opposite side of the room (not seen here). The cabinets are painted in Ho Ho Green by Little Greene, the handles are our bespoke inset handle in burnished brass and the worktops are 30mm, polished SG Carrara quartz. The client opted for Amtico flooring which looks beautiful with the white painted walls and green cupboards.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area. If you find that you don’t utilise the back of your cupboards (maybe they become the graveyard for out-of-date tin cans), you could decide to go with shallower kitchen units to free up some extra floor space in front of your cabinets. However, if you have the capacity for it, cupboards and kitchen units that maximise the floor-to-ceiling space you have will mean you can use all of that for valuable kitchen storage. Wall or ceiling racks could be a useful solution for hanging pans and pots if you’ve run out of cupboards in which to store them. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space. What sort of kitchen lighting should I go for?
