This yard started with dead grass, no irrigation to the back planter, water seeping through the block wall and the yard felt small. We removed all grass, removed the dirt in the planter, tar backed the wall and added a valve and PVC line for irrigation. We then started the new design incorporating small moundings with a natural path and low water use plantings. Deana M. Chiavola

To further lighten the look, there are extra-large polished concrete steppers which flow from the front fence to the porch. These give the appearance of floating over the garden and tie in with the Corten steel raised planters. When the sun sets, strip lighting under the floating steppers and garden uplights work together to bring the front garden to life in a whole new way. Photographer: Mike Hemus - mikehemus.com

To compliment the home's minimalistic style, the front landscape consists of elevated poured concrete borders, straight, clean and formal lines that are accentuated with decorative, architectural pots to create a clean, modern entry to the home.

Black ceramic planters containing privet standards and festive annuals flank the stone patio stairs leading from a wrought iron railed outdoor eating area to a formal gravel path. Colorful garden beds are bordered by English boxwood in classic Arts and Crafts style.

The traditional fountain and surroundings are embellished with a variety of drought tolerant grasses, flowering plants and succulents. The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs provides more outdoor living space for dining and entertaining for the homeowners' enjoyment. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn there is less maintenance and a lower water bill. Full color Blue stone and small mexican pebbles replace the lawn and pathways resulting in an updated and contemporary transformation. A variety of low-water plants including succulents offer year-round appeal and interest throughout the seasons. Photos and Design © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
