This yard started with dead grass, no irrigation to the back planter, water seeping through the block wall and the yard felt small. We removed all grass, removed the dirt in the planter, tar backed the wall and added a valve and PVC line for irrigation. We then started the new design incorporating small moundings with a natural path and low water use plantings. Deana M. Chiavola

This is a California xeriscape succulent garden. Clients wanted color and texture with drought-resistant plant materials. They enjoy garden sculptures, so we included a Buddha and a Roman bust planted with succulents. The previous owners of the property left behind some old San Francisco cobblestones, which we incorporated into the new design, using them as garden steps. We built low, raised beds out of stone, also existing on the property, and used containers along steps and against existing concrete walls to soften the hard surfaces.

Between a grade 2 listed property and a separate wooden outbuilding lies the garden. You enter through a pair of beautiful, bespoke Iroko hardwood gates. To either side are brick planters housing a Beech hedge. Riven sandstone paths lead you through green oak arches, to oak and brick seats and a large raised dining area. A pair of water chutes and traditional cottage planting complete the picture.
