Sweet Bottom Plantation - No. 13 The Battery
This is one of two Charleston style homes that Greg Mix designed in the Sweet Bottom Plantation subdivision north of Atlanta in Duluth, Georgia.
This red brick home is a reproduction of number 13 on The Battery, right on Charleston Bay. However in this case the plan has been flipped and laid out inside to suit the modern lifestyle. As you can see in the photos it contains a double spiral stairway. The three car garage is on the ground floor as well as the front entry, study, guest room and a pool bath which exist directly onto the pool area in the back yard. The main living areas are on the next level up or the first floor. This level includes the family room, living room, dining room, breakfast room and kitchen. The third level or second floor contains the master suite and two additional bedrooms.
The current owners have furnished the house beautifully and built private Charleston style gardens to the side and rear.

The client's inspiration for the backyard was to incorporate the moroccan tile design from the mudroom into a part of the exterior, so we designed a custom screen and integrated it into the pergola. We built a new fence at one side of the property, installed new hardscaping, dining and seating areas, landscaping and seasonal planters into the space.

Baskets look like giant flower balls because they are planted in the sides as well as the top. They give real impact when mounted on wooden posts (www.kinsmangarden.com). The baskets are planted with grasses, salvia, sweet potato vines, coleus, and begonias. Blue and red salvia, vinca, and marigolds are planted beneath the baskets. The charming entrance of the storybook garden is highlighted with substantial urns filled with seasonal flowers and greenery that are changed each season to enhance the dreamy, fairytale atmosphere throughout the year.

Stepping stones in a minimal gravel paved area lead past two lounge chairs to the intimate dining area. The herringbone-patterned limestone patio dissipates into a lush planting bed filled with loose swaths of shade-loving perennials and seasonal bulbs. Beech hedging, and formal clipped evergreens, surround the space and provide privacy, structure and winter interest to the garden. On axis to the main interior living space of the home, the fountain, is the focal point of the garden. A limestone water wall featuring an engraved pattern of fallen Honey Locust leaves nods to the centrally located mature Honey Locust tree that anchors the garden. Water, flowing down the wall, falls a short distance into a pool with a submerged limestone panel. The light noise of the falling water helps soften the sounds of the bustling downtown neighbourhood, creating a tranquil back drop for living and entertaining.
Amber Freda Garden Design
This rooftop garden, located in Brooklyn’s Park Slope, received a total design makeover, turning it from a barren space into a lush garden oasis. Our re-design included low-maintenance composite decking (rated for fire safety), a custom-built pergola, outdoor kitchen, and gorgeous, multi-level plantings. The style of the plantings is somewhere between an English garden and the Highline, giving an informal and slightly wild feeling to the space. Plantings include hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, evergreen arborvitaes and inkberry hollies, catmint, and creeping Jenny. All of the planters are irrigated using drip irrigation lines and illuminated at night via low-voltage landscape lighting. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.
