The Distinctive GardenerThe Distinctive Gardener
this garden was designed for a respite home for dementia patients. The darker pavers act as a direction finder. They lead people around the garden. The Gazebo is used by patients and families to enjoy some time together outside. This garden has worked very well. It helps to calm people down and has made a big difference for the staff running the centre These beds are used by patients to plant up with annual flowering plants. They are designed to be both able bodied and wheel chair accessible

This stately, Chestnut Hill, circa 1890, brick home sits on idyllic grounds of mature planting. Our objective was to integrate the new with the old world charm of the property. We achieved this with additional plantings, seasonal color, restoring and adding masonry walls and steps as well as the installation of an elegant eurocobble drive and courtyard. Since the back yard is at the end of a short alley, the privacy fence is essential to completing the coziness factor. It serves to block the view of the driveway, alley and the neighbor’s yards and vehicles. The homeowners liked the lattice on the old fence so the gate has that carry-over feature which allows them to see through to the driveway plus gives the gate a little character. The top of the fence is meant to mimic the pattern of the top of the windows at the back of the house. The stucco columns in the fence, on either side of the gate and down that side of the yard, tie into the house using the same stucco finish and the Indiana limestone caps on the columns match the caps on top of the upper terrace and the window sills.

This garden design in Castleknock was transformed from the typical dull garden, that comes with all new builds in housing estates these days, into a contemporary oasis. Our client wanted to enjoy her garden from morning sunrise right through to sunset, so we designed two patios, positioned to get the full benefit of the sun throughout the day. Like most new builds in housing estates, the garden and kitchen of the house are quite overlooked from the terrace of houses to the rear. For more privacy we incorporated a ‘Hedge in the Sky’ of evergreen Espalier Elaeagnus. We also made sure that there were generous planting areas left along all borders and that the lawn was framed with porcelain strips, for effortless lawn maintenance. Stepping stone pavers create an elegant design element in the small garden, guiding the way to the shed.

We were asked to design and plant the driveway and gardens surrounding a substantial period property in Cobham. Our Scandinavian clients wanted a soft and natural look to the planting. We used long flowering shrubs and perennials to extend the season of flower, and combined them with a mix of beautifully textured evergreen plants to give year-round structure. We also mixed in a range of grasses for movement which also give a more contemporary look.
