Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces. We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem.

Looking at this home today, you would never know that the project began as a poorly maintained duplex. Luckily, the homeowners saw past the worn façade and engaged our team to uncover and update the Victorian gem that lay underneath. Taking special care to preserve the historical integrity of the 100-year-old floor plan, we returned the home back to its original glory as a grand, single family home. The project included many renovations, both small and large, including the addition of a a wraparound porch to bring the façade closer to the street, a gable with custom scrollwork to accent the new front door, and a more substantial balustrade. Windows were added to bring in more light and some interior walls were removed to open up the public spaces to accommodate the family’s lifestyle. The functionality of the mudroom is great. The door, painted a cheery shade called “Castaway,” brings a smile to your face every time you leave. It's affectionately referred to by the homeowners as the "Smile Door." Photo by Mike Mroz of Michael Robert Construction

A vintage, salvaged wood door replaced the original and was painted a bright blue to match the beadboard porch ceiling. The fresh color happily welcomes you home every day. Photography by Josh Vick
