These first-time parents wanted to create a sanctuary in their home, a place to retreat and enjoy some self-care after a long day. They were inspired by the simplicity and natural elements found in wabi-sabi design so we took those basic elements and created a spa-like getaway.

Exterior dimensions (in) 51.5 L x 36.25 W x 33.75 H Inspired by ancient Japanese traditions of soaking in Ofuro tubs, the True Ofuro Japanese style bathtub is a ‘sit and soak’, solid surface bathtub, featuring a deep design for a full-body immersion. Crafted in Italy, this immaculately sculpted tub is available with an optional inline water heater and digital control panel with temperature display, which will reduce water consumption and provide for a prolonged soaking experience at very comfortable temperatures. One of the True Ofuro's key features is it's carefully designed elevated rim for improved bathers neck and head support, and the convenient ergonomic seating, which allows the body to be comfortably emerged to maximum water capacity. The international industrial design team, commissioned by Aquatica to create this product, used advanced CAD tools, modeling and repeated testing with real size prototype units, in order to reach the optimal balance between ergonomic comfort and visual appeal for this one of a kind bathtub. Thanks to the AquateX™ material, this Japanese soaking tub retains heat for much longer and has a silky and smooth surface. Besides being one of our most space conscious bathtubs, the freestanding and petite construction of this Japanese style bathtub means that it can be installed pretty much anywhere in your bathroom.

The small bathroom is not wide enough for a traditional bathtub so a hand-built cedar Ofuro soaking tub allows for deep, luxurious bathing. Stand up showers are no problem. Photo by Kate Russell

From her travels and extensive research this design savvy homeowner knew what she wanted to do with her 16-year-old builder’s grade master bath – create an elegant and luxurious modern spa-bath. The 16-year-old original bath was gutted of a large unused tub, the dated non-functional vanity, and the aluminum-framed, prefabricated-pan shower. All remnants of the former bath were removed including the drywall. The dramatically transformed space now has a predominately monochromic look that is accented with subtle textures and tones.

From what was once a humble early 90’s decor space, the contrast that has occurred in this ensuite is vast. On return from a holiday in Japan, our clients desired the same bath house cultural experience, that is known to the land of onsens, for their own ensuite. The transition in this space is truly exceptional, with the new layout all designed within the same four walls, still maintaining a vanity, shower, bath and toilet. Our designer, Eugene Lombard put much careful consideration into the fittings and finishes to ensure all the elements were pulled together beautifully. The wet room setting is enhanced by a bench seat which allows the user a moment of transition between the shower and hot, deep soaker style bath. The owners now wake up to a captivating “day-spa like experience” that most would aspire to on a holiday, let alone an everyday occasion. Key features like the underfloor heating in the entrance are added appeal to beautiful large format tiles along with the wood grain finishes which add a sense of warmth and balance to the room.

A poky upstairs layout becomes a spacious master suite, complete with a Japanese soaking tub to warm up in the long, wet months of the Pacific Northwest. The master bath now contains a central space for the vanity, a “wet room” with shower and an "ofuro" soaking tub, and a private toilet room. Photos by Laurie Black

The goal of Pineapple House designers was to stay within existing footprint while improving the look, storage capabilities and functionality of the master bath. Along the right wall, they replace the existing tub with a freestanding Roman soaking tub. Glass shower walls lets natural light illuminate the formerly dark, enclosed corner shower. Along the left wall, a new double-sink vanity has hidden storage in tall, slender doors that are configured to mimic columns. The central section of the long vanity has a make-up drawer and more storage behind the mirror. Along the back wall, a custom unit houses a television that intentionally blends into the deep coloration of the millwork. An under counter refrigerator is located in the lower left portion of unit.
