Big Bowl O' Canada Sculptural Firebowl
Big Bowl O' Canada Sculptural Firebowl

The Big Bowl O Canada takes it's name from Canada's National Anthem, composed in 1880 by Calixa Lavallée, a talented musician whose father worked as a woodcutter, blacksmith and luthier. Although many variations of the song exist, in multiple languages, the tune is the same for all. I couldn't resist the connection between music and sculpture, between firebowls, lumberjacks and blacksmithing. The idea of art arising from hard work, skill and a grounding in the natural world is at the heart of this design. The motif was inspired by a custom Great Bowl O' Fire for a Calgary client who requested a stylized flame in the shape of a maple leaf. I liked the results so much that it moved me to create a design especially for the Great White North. I've shipped firebowls all across Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax. As the second largest land mass on earth, that's a lot of ground to cover. Filled with natural beauty and wonders, peopled by folks who love the outdoors, I can't think of any place that has more use for a firebowl that is solid and durable, beautiful and meaningful, large enough to gather a group of friends under a huge night sky

Add color to any patio with bright new curtains, lighting and a few pillows. This previously unused area had way too much southern exposure! To block out the heat and bright sun-light, I hung these sheer water proof curtains.

This design and build project included a full backyard and side yard. The clients spent most of their time outdoors, but especially enjoyed use of their deck, so this was an important item to integrate into the design. ‘Meadow Peak’ was designed to be a retreat, eliminating the hassle of driving up north. We wanted to create a space that was functional for their family and could keep them entertained for many summers to come. Retaining walls and patio spaces were constructed around large existing trees to maintain shade and privacy, the firepit lounge area, tucked beneath them. Turf areas help to break up the interlock and are a fun feature to practice your putting. Most importantly, upgrading their deck to a new larger composite deck with a dining pergola, allows them to continue to entertain outdoors on those hot summer days.

Established the most picturesque spot, the balcony which was neglected and used entirely for utility is now a getaway to the quirky wonderland for our client. While the result is indeed a dream of an English country getaway, it’s also quintessentially tasteful: a mixture of high style with unfussy restraint touches of whimsy, classic English references, and plenty of colours. The interiors are rustic but polished. Of the sage-walled sitting room, with its eclectic mix of geometrics and florals, “I wanted it to be a bit mismatched, with the feeling that something came together naturally. To complement the space aesthetics we choose to go with lush foliage and our Monstera being the highlight of the space.

One of the biggest challenges on this project was finding a place for the pool mechanicals that did not dominate your view from the space. Due to city zoning rules we also could not move it away from the pool. So we placed the pool mechanicals with an A/C condenser up against the house and used a landscape screen and plantings to hide it from users of the space. This is seen in the photo above the Hot Tub.
