This steep slope is a series of retaining walls planted with deep rooted and drought tolerant plantings to retain the slope. The scene is framed with a fire pit to the left and a river below. And on the other side, there is a naturalistic water feature comprising a waterfall and pond. Natural stone was used for the construction of the retaining walls, the water feature and the fire pit and patio. This is great combination of practical and environmentally friendly solutions to create usable space.

First year planting for this project is a simple monochrome of greens and white. Low maintenance with small white flowers on the Geranium in the spring followed by the Annabelle Hydrangea white flowers all summer to late fall. The birches are preset through the summer with nice fall yellow coloring and interesting beige exfoliating bark for the winter. Some of the Heritage Birch trees are split for evening effect, underneath the wall caps are led lights as well as the steps.

A cleaned up pathway with concrete pavers and Mexican pebbles transform this landscape update. To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance.
