The home’s green building features include solar hot water panels, rainwater cisterns, high-efficiency insulation and FSC certified cedar shingles and interior doors. I love the look of board and batten walls but can't afford the full treatment right now. I scoured pictures on the web and found that some people are doing a faux treatment and it turns out pretty effective. So without hesitation...I decided to jump in. I first painted the top portion a dark green (at first I thought...wow that's really dark. But I love the color now). I installed molding horizontally about 5-1/2' from the floor. I next (with the help of the hubby) ripped a 4' x 8' piece of mdf into 3" strips. I then applied them to the wall with construction adhesive and brad nails. I then caulked and painted everything cottage white semi-gloss to match the existing molding throughout the house. Made new curtains, brought the furniture back in. I think it turned out pretty good!

As a final touch, we also provided an electric roller blind with matching fascia and fabric to create a truly complete appearance to the room, with a very balanced design to the soft furnishings and over all colour palette. Not only does the roller blind operate almost silently, but it can be grouped to work with the lantern roof blind or just operate on its own using the fully featured app available from Somfy®.

A round table leaves plenty of room for serving food at its centre, but a rectangular table is more flexible for seating extra guests at either end. What are the best dining chairs for my table?

If your table hasn’t been sold with matching chairs then you have some extra flexibility to select dining chairs that suit your desired dining room feel. For traditional dining rooms you will want to opt for a full set of high backed formal dining chairs, whether these are upholstered, leather or wood framed. If you are looking for a more informal dining room, then a selection of mismatched chairs in different materials such as moulded plastic and even metal can be a great way to achieve this. For a really relaxed dining experience, you could even opt for a full length bench, which has the additional advantage of saving space as it can be tucked away under the table when not in use.

How should I decorate my dining room?

Elegant, neutral palettes are the safest dining room decorating ideas for smaller rooms, creating a calm dining environment for your guests.
