Adding exterior lighting under the eaves of the porch adds functionality in the dark, but during the early evening hours, this lighting adds dimension and a cozy vibe.

Newly built house needed a landscape. So from dirt sprang a usable backyard with a firepit, barbeque, retaining walls, and lawn area for the dog.

This lovely estate property boasts a large and focal front entrance and road entry design in balance with the expansive home. The free form driveway inlay breaks up the large front yard drive/ patio space and adds a focal point. Large retained gardens with trees further ground the home. The roadside entry has 2 large address stones and drought tolerant gardens to welcome both residence and visitors alike. This amazing project won 2 "Awards of Excellence" from both Landscape Ontario and Unilock Life in 2010-2011. Landscape design by Melanie Rekola

The front areas of this landscape were transformed from a tired, water thirsty lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance and a new driveway using large concrete slabs with small black pebbles set in resin. Plants for sun and part shade complete this project. They include Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', a non-stop bloomer in northern california with orange/yellow flowers, with Creeping Raspberry (Rubus pentalobus) a tough ground covers that forms a dense matt. Elfin thyme ground cover softens the concrete pathway, and mondo grass on other side of pathway with a Japanese Maple tree accented with Mexican pebbles. Completed in February 2014. The back areas of this transformation are in a separate project: Modern Water-Side Landscape Remodel. Photos: © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design.

Selected by the Lunaria League and Idaho Botanical Gardens for the 2012 Garden Tour. My customer wanted a garden full of sedums. The Yucca and the Bristlecone Pine add vertical interest. The water feature/fire pit adds a unique element to the landscape. The sitting area around the fire feature is built from natural stone, accented with tile that matches the reflecting pool structure.

Urban landscape masterplan and installation. We created continuity of color, texture, and form starting at the street and front yard, and reaching to the rear yard and alleyway. Contemporary and naturalistic plantings blur the lines of rigidity and formality of this modern garden, while the structure of hardscaping holds the composition together year-round.

This “Arizona Inspired” home draws on some of the couples’ favorite desert inspirations. The architecture honors the Wrightian design of The Arizona Biltmore, the courtyard raised planter beds feature labeled specimen cactus in the style of the Desert Botanical Gardens, and the expansive backyard offers a resort-style pool and cabana with plenty of entertainment space. Additional focal areas of landscape design include an outdoor living room in the front courtyard with custom steel fire trough, a shallow negative-edge fountain, and a rare “nurse tree” that was salvaged from a nearby site, sits in the corner of the courtyard – a unique conversation starter. The wash that runs on either side of the museum-glass hallway is filled with aloes, agaves and cactus. On the far end of the lot, a fire pit surrounded by desert planting offers stunning views both day and night of the Praying Monk rock formation on Camelback Mountain. We used Techobloc Blu80 for the driveway and walkway, which blended well with the look of the house and the concrete in the back garden.
