Chester Springs New Bar and Basement renovation required moving walls to make room for new 15 foot L-shaped, two level bar. Back 15" inset, dark espresso stained, cherry glass wall cabinets and base cabinets combine with opposing 24" base cabinet housing bar sink, 15" ice maker, 18" dishwasher, 24" wine cooler, and 24" beverage cooler. 800 square feet on travertine flooring ties together a modern feel with stacked stone wall of electric fireplace, bar front, and bar back wall. Vintage Edison hanging bulbs and inset cabinets cause a transitional design. Bathroom boasts a spacious shower with frameless glass enclosure.

This remodel was inspired by a Houzz picture I saw a few weeks ago. We have a basement with great spaces, but it was never fully developed by the previous owners. When we moved in, it was underutilized because it wasn't warm or inviting. Step one of our basement remodel project involved putting in a comfortable, family room living space that was comfy enough for the kids to watch movies and play video games, but also manly enough to have in a man-cave worthy basement when the guys come over to watch the game. I used Eldorado Stacked Stone for the walls (Chapel Hill was the stone name), and the custom looking book shelves are from IKEA. I just built around everything to give it a custom look. This only cost us about $1500 - including the stone, shelves, entertainment center, lights, etc. The TV is not include in that price. ;-)

This is the recently finished "SOHO" style basement. There are four people in the home (2 young children) We have always loved the NY Soho vibe and decided to bring it to our basement. The wine cellar,bar,kitchenette, and entertainment center are all made of stainless steel and African Wenge. Joseph and Curtis Custom Wine Cellars built,designed, and installed all of them. The entertainment center has an access door to our mechanical space on the right side...that cabinet had to be built to fit to the 1/16th of an inch, yet be on rollers. The wine cellar has 8 lockers for friends to share their own little space in the wine room. The bar was designed after seeing the Trump Soho hoyel bar...with just a little more detail :)

A contemporary basement conversion is particularly suitable for urban homes on small plots and can offer the perfect solution for extending a terraced or semi-detached urban home. Whilst it is typically more costly to convert a basement than to complete a loft conversion or extension, for those that have already completed these renovations or where even more space is required, extending below ground can be the best option. The best candidates are homes with an existing cellar and it is just a case of deepening or expanding the existing space. If you don't have a cellar, a retro-fit contemporary basement can be created but a project of this magnitude will require additional time and money.

What room should I turn my basement or cellar into?

The proximity of the basement conversion to the living areas and internal infrastructure of the house make it ideal for additional living, recreational and utility rooms. It can also lend itself well to creating an entirely separate, self-contained annexe or apartment. If you’re just extending your house for some extra space to play with, the contemporary basement ideas you could have are the stuff of dreams: home gyms, snooker rooms, wine cellars, home bars and indoor swimming pools are among the most exciting uses.

How should I tackle a cellar or basement conversion?

The best thing to do is contact a professional to assess how feasible it will be to have a basement conversion or excavation in your home. There’s no point looking at lots of contemporary basement ideas if it would actually be structurally impossible to install a basement room. You should also check what permissions and consents you will need before beginning a project like this – a basement conversion can be very disruptive for you and neighbours so you need to make sure you are legally allowed to go ahead with the conversion first. Your chosen contractors will then need to underpin foundations for support, completely waterproof the basement and build in the internal walls. Then, all the finishing touches, staircases, flooring and electrics will need to be completed. Remember to consider internal balconies or mezzanines, as well as light wells and perhaps sunken terraces outside of the basement to introduce as much light as possible.
