The brief Our clients approached us with the goal of creating a long-term living solution in their beloved neighbourhood as they age. They made the decision to demolish their decades-old house and divide the plot in half, constructing two separate single dwellings. Our approach At first glance, the dual residences exhibit a minimalist street presentation that leads to remarkably luxurious minimalist spaces inside. Inspired by the architectural styles of Mies van der Rohe and Reichs’s Barcelona Pavilion, the design capitalizes on the surrounding views and conveys a sense of shared usage. Skylights strategically positioned in living areas and bathrooms create dramatic pools of light. For the client’s unit, our focus was on facilitating comfortable aging in place. Wide hallways and concealed fixtures in the bathrooms were incorporated to accommodate potential future accessibility needs. Throughout the property, including the landscaping and the house itself, minimal maintenance was emphasized. We employed subtly high-end fixtures and finishes such as polished Venetian plaster, concrete, and marble. Unit 2, on the other hand, was designed for resale or family use. Although slightly smaller, it still boasts three bedrooms and features the upscale finishes one would expect in a residence in Brighton.

Drei Gebäude, zwei Doppelhäuser und ein Einfamilienhaus, bilden ein neues, modernes Ensemble in Peissenberg am Fuße des Hohen Peissenbergs. Auf Grund der etwas erhöhten Lage und der Südausrichtung ergibt sich ein wunderbarer Blick auf die Alpen. Eigenes Erkennungsmerkmal des Ensembles ist die Dachlandschaft: jede Doppelhaushälfte hat ihr eigenes Satteldach. Dies vermeidet städtebaulich unnötige Höhen, und lässt zudem jede Hälfte ungleich eigenständiger und somit hochwertiger erscheinen, als dies bei traditionellen Doppelhäusern der Fall ist. Loggien auf allen Geschossen auf der Gartenseite verstärken das Gefühl der Privatsphäre. Holz-Inlays in den Innenseiten der Loggien bringen „Alpen-Flair“. Durch die Hanglage werden die Untergeschosse perfekt belichtet und sind vollwertige Wohnebenen. Zur Straße hin wirken die Häuser in Bezug auf Fassade und Höhe dagegen zurückhaltend.

Modern appliances and smart storage solutions ensure a seamless culinary experience, while the thoughtful integration of seating and dining arrangements invites warmth and conversation.

With views out to sea, ocean breezes, and an east-facing aspect, our challenge was to create 2 light-filled homes which will be comfortable through the year. The form of the design has been carefully considered to compliment the surroundings in shape, scale and form, with an understated contemporary appearance. Skillion roofs and raked ceilings, along with large expanses of northern glass and light-well stairs draw light into each unit and encourage cross ventilation. Each home embraces the views from upper floor living areas and decks, with feature green roof gardens adding colour and texture to the street frontage as well as providing privacy and shade. Family living areas open onto lush and shaded garden courtyards at ground level for easy-care family beach living. Materials selection for longevity and beauty include weatherboard, corten steel and hardwood, creating a timeless 'beach-vibe'.

この計画では、サウジアラビアの高所得者向けに周辺の画一的な街並みから差異ある住まい方を計画し、これからの建築文化発展へ寄与することを目的にしている。建物ボリュームは住戸群を敷地境界に並行に配置するのではなく、約45℃回転させて配置することにした。これにより、隣地もしくは道路向かいの建物と対面しないで良い上に十分な距離感を確保できる。メゾネット型の住戸ユニットは上限間でフロアをずらし、奥行き感のあるユニットとし、それの積み方を工夫することで6.4mの大胆な片持ちを実現する一方で全体として構造安定性と開放性を確保する。結果的に各住戸ユニットに独立性が生まれ、全体の印象として浮遊感を与えている。この住戸群の中央を貫通するように、歴史的なイスラム建築の構成要素の一つであるイーワーンに倣い、半外部の大空間であるオープンヴォイドを計画した。ここには緑が計画され風や光が通るため、1階は庭園のようなオープンロビー、2階は遊歩道のようなバルコニーとなる。4階のフロアボリュームがこのオープンな1階、2階の庇としての役割を持ち、雨量の多い気候に対応している。オープンヴォイド上部の天窓は光の取り入れや排熱など独特な気候状況に対応する計画としている。

The project reconfigured and extended a previously dilapidated three storey end-of-terrace Victorian house, transforming it into a large and spacious family home. The house is located on a quiet residential street within the Graham Road and Mapledene Conservation Area, close to the popular green spaces of London Fields.

In fußläufiger Entfernung zum historischen Stadtzentrum entsteht ein Ensemble aus einem Mehrfamilienhaus und zwei Doppelhäusern. Trotz der hohen Verdichtung erlaubt eine Tiefgarage, an die auch die beiden Doppelhäuser angeschlossen sind, hochwertig begrünte und attraktive Gebäudezwischenräume. Energetisch ist das Ensemble als 0-Energie-Komplex konzipiert. Von Anfang an berücksichtigte Solarpaneele, nicht nur auf den Dächern sondern auch in der Fassade, tragen dies selbstbewusst nach außen. Eine differenzierte Fassadengliederung, ungewöhnliche Balkon- und Loggienausbildungen schaffen Zonierung und Wertigkeit und heben das Projekt aus der Beliebigkeit sonstiger Geschosswohnungsbauten und gleichförmiger Doppelhäuser mit Doppelgaragen heraus. Hier dominiert nicht das Auto, sondern die für Menschen konzipierten und begrünten „Zwischenräume“. Die historisch-farbige Altstadt wird abgewandelt in Form eines Farbkonzeptes mit diversen Pastelltönen aufgegriffen.

With so much attention devoted to interior design, the exterior of a home can often get overlooked, but as the first thing that welcomes both us and our guests, it is worth devoting some time tending to the outside of your house. Furthermore, focusing on the kerb appeal of your home can add significant value if and when it comes time to sell up. Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian homes, with their bay windows and elegant plasterwork, often benefit from built in architecture advantages, but even if your house design is unassuming from the outside, small decorative and structural improvements to the exterior of your home can equal huge impact. Key areas of building design to focus on are the front door, the driveway or approach to your home, the porch area, the windows, the facade and the roof. And just a note of caution... before any significant exterior architecture gets under way, check first whether you need planning permission for your exterior house designs– this applies particularly to listed houses or buildings in a conservation area, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you are lucky enough to have period windows such as bay windows with sash or leaded windows, then maintaining them should be a top priority, but if they are beyond repair then there are plenty of window professionals that will offer modern, double or triple glazed equivalents that could still work in your bay window. Working with uPVC? Not a problem – the best improvement you can make is to ensure your windows are the right size and shape for your home's overall proportions.

When it comes to updating the facade of your home, painting is the quickest and most affordable way to achieve a makeover, and if you opt for a colour other than white it can really make a statement (although sticking within the palette of your road and local area is advisable). A New England style wood boarded home is beautiful and bright, but remember that it will need frequent repainting if it is going to stay looking its best, whilst stucco render or Tyrolean render can tidy up a home's exterior but think carefully before covering over original brickwork.

What should I consider if building a home from scratch?

If you’re working with an architect on a brand new build, the options are endless when it comes to deciding on the exterior architecture. But first things first, you will need to check planning permissions, building regulations and local restrictions, such as being in a conservation area, to make sure your plans for your exterior house designs will meet stipulations. If you are building in a street with predominantly Victorian facades, with bay windows and side returns, you might need to ensure your house designs fit in with the rest of the homes on the street, but if you’re building in a more remote area you’ll probably have more freedom for your building design. There are many architectural decisions to make, do you want a flat, gabled, hipped, mansard or perhaps even a curved roof? Do you want bay windows? Crittall windows? Perhaps external shutters? Do you want glass walls? Do you want wood cladding? Do you want a very symmetrical building design or something more contemporary? The decision is all yours but remember to consider the benefits of various materials over others and the effects that some architecture styles will have on everyday life, for example glass walls will look attractive but will give you less privacy. Your architect or builder will be able to guide you through the best exterior architecture choices for your house designs.
