Converted Rarely Used Screen Porch to Year Round Room
Converted Rarely Used Screen Porch to Year Round Room

An existing screen porch area that got dirty, cold and windy in winter or too hot in summer. They could not enjoy the backyard and wanted a space in which they could feel more outdoors. We added a Four Seasons Sunrooms System 230 Aluminum walls under system to give a feeling of all glass that could convert to screens in seconds because all the windows are operable or removable in summer. This blended a technically modern sunroom in with the existing architecture and complimented their home.

With south facing rear, one of the key aspects of the design was to separate the new living / kitchen space from the original house with a courtyard - to allow northern light to the main living spaces. The courtyard also provides cross ventilation and a great connection with the garden. This is a huge change from the original south facing kitchen and meals, which was not only very small, but quite dark and gloomy. Another key design element was to increase the connection with the garden. Despite the beautiful backyard and leafy suburb, the original house was completely cut off from the garden. Now you can see the backyard the moment you step in the front door, and the courtyard breaks the journey as you move through the central corridor of the home to the new kitchen and living area. The entire interior of the home is light and bright. The rear elevation is contemporary, and provides a definite contrast to the original house, but doesn't feel out of place. There is a connection in the architecture between the old and new - for example, in the scale, in the materials, in the pitch of the roof.

This is an addition to a basic 4 roomed Victorian cottage which attempts to create a new aesthetic which provides a passive solar living/dining/kitchen space and spare bedroom. The addition is clad in corrugated zincalume and features an internal black glazed brick wall from Euroa Bricks. The addition is steel framed and has a simple scallion which gives the modest addition a sense of scale in keeping with the high ceilings in the existing house. Geoff Higgins

An iconic house form expressed as architectural form. Simple entries and an expressed east and west gable in cedar provide warmth and clarified entry to the home. A reclaimed log cabin (the original farmstead house from the 1890's) was found on site and repurposed to be used as storage and situated adjacent to the new home, connected by a large west facing deck.

Set your house in from the property boundaries so that you have some distance from your neighbours and room to move around and enjoy all of your land. Have some space in the sun to grow your own food. Store your own rainwater, generate your own electricity. Your land is expensive, use it to be productive and not just to drain finite resources from the grid. Self-sufficiency is and will be key to our quality of life into the future.

The minimal, unobtrusive, existing porch is heritage so couldn't be enlarged. It was refurbished and sealed from the weather, with the patterned tiles acting as the sign to the entry. Photo by David Beynon Builder - Citywide Building Services
