The L-shaped plan frames a welcoming entryway beside the upper garden. A modular wood awning and refined lighting fixtures is accented by a cherry red front door for a pop of color.

In this project I set out to create a modern yet inviting front yard. Having ditched the lawn we went with a drought tolerant plant pallet made up of gray and blue foliage, with pops of orange. I save on irrigation I designed the space to capture all the rain water that falls on the property. This was achieved through contouring the land to capture rain water and then incorporating various gravels into the hard scape. Gravel slows water down dining it a chance to absorb into the soil.

Recently, Origin Architectural supplied a customer based in Newport with a beautiful frameless glass balustrade. The customer had recently converted their garage into a summer house, they have a large window with great views of their garden and neighbouring fields. Outside of the window was a raised path with a drop of over a meter. They wanted some sort of barrier, as they have young grandchildren, but also, they did not want to spoil the view, so I ran through the different options we offer. We both agreed that the best option would be the frameless glass system, without a handrail for minimal interference.

The existing excavated limestone boulders were strategically repositioned to not only serve as functional components but also as visually striking features to the modified design of the dry creek pathways and planted areas. The trees are viewed as an opportunity to utilize dark Whittlesey mulch to provide contrast, water retention, and tie in to other defined beds and oak clusters on the property. The front walk is comprised of sawn limestone pavers surrounded by crushed limestone rock mulch and accented by river rock dry creek bed that follows through to the backyard. The existing overwhelmed downspouts were replaced with rain chains, which not only effectively managed the water flow but also added a touch of elegance that matched the home's style. To work in tandem with the rain chains, 8” limestone block splash pads were installed beneath them to act as splash pads. The limestone block beautifully matches and enhances the existing architecture of the property, as well as the materials used throughout the landscaping.
