A covered verandah, a garage studio, and a cedar bridge work in harmony to extend the interior living areas of this modern home out into the back yard. A rock garden nestles in the H-shaped plan of the house, and the composed landscape crosses under a bridge and breaks into stepping stones to help define the soft transitions necessary for this tranquil setting. Orchestrated paths articulate the different destinations: the living area and music room in the house, and the garage studio/ping pong arena. Light moves across the space from late morning to dusk and dapples through the trees, highlighting Japanese grasses and softening the division between interior and exterior serenity.

We used a Silvermist Boulder and Mexican Beach Pebbles to build a soothing water feature that also attracts birds and other pollinators. The herb garden that surrounds it does double duty for the homeowner who loves to cook!

We were honored to have the ability to work on the pool along with the architect for this custom home. Due to this ability, the architecture of the home emerges from the swimming pool design. The slate clad column rises right out of the water. The beam that spans the pool also provides a beautiful rain curtain that the homeowners can look through, to see the mountains and beyond. This pool is actually located in the front yard on the second level (with garage below), therefore the pool is part of every entry experience to the home.

This newly constructed home was in need of an outdoor living space and streetscape in a matching contemporary Northwest style. Our studio composed a landscape with an improved entry sequence, balancing the need for personal privacy alongside a distinctive public face. A courtyard oasis with a new deck is enclosed by warm wooden fencing set on top of the contrasting raw texture of a gabion retaining wall that acts as a backdrop to bold streetscape plantings.

Xeric landscape designed and built by Southern Landscape. This Austin homeowner reduced their turf area by over 17,000 square feet, reducing water consumption and maintenance. The remaining turf areas were required for the septic leach field. Limestone retaining walls with leuders caps control erosion. The plant palette contains lantana, plumbago, various grasses, and yuccas, all chosen for their specific water usage appropriate to the area. Landscape lighting was also added to highlight the beauty of this large xeriscape.
