"I want people to say 'Wow!' when they walk in to my house" This was our directive for this bachelor's newly purchased home. We accomplished the mission by drafting plans for a significant remodel which included removing walls and columns, opening up the spaces between rooms to create better flow, then adding custom furnishings and original art for a customized unique Wow factor! His Christmas party proved we had succeeded as each person 'wowed!' the spaces! Even more meaningful to us, as Designers, was watching everyone converse in the sitting area, dining room, living room, and around the grand island (12'-6" grand to be exact!) and genuinely enjoy all the fabulous, yet comfortable spaces.

The transformation of this high-rise condo in the heart of San Francisco was literally from floor to ceiling. Studio Becker custom built everything from the bed and shoji screens to the interior doors and wall paneling...and of course the kitchen, baths and wardrobes! It’s all Studio Becker in this master bedroom - teak light boxes line the ceiling, shoji sliding doors conceal the walk-in closet and house the flat screen TV. A custom teak bed with a headboard and storage drawers below transition into full-height night stands with mirrored fronts (with lots of storage inside) and interior up-lit shelving with a light valance above. A window seat that provides additional storage and a lounging area finishes out the room. Teak wall paneling with a concealed touchless coat closet, interior shoji doors and a desk niche with an inset leather writing surface and cord catcher are just a few more of the customized features built for this condo. This Collection M kitchen, in Manhattan, high gloss walnut burl and Rimini stainless steel, is packed full of fun features, including an eating table that hydraulically lifts from table height to bar height for parties, an in-counter appliance garage in a concealed elevation system and Studio Becker’s electric Smart drawer with custom inserts for sushi service, fine bone china and stemware. Combinations of teak and black lacquer with custom vanity designs give these bathrooms the Asian flare the homeowner’s were looking for. This project has been featured on HGTV's Million Dollar Rooms

This Old House, Bedford. I was asked to be back on the team to work on the second oldest house TOH had ever worked on! It was a great project, super homeowners and a fair amount of discovery and challenges as we brought this old house back to her former glory. The homeowner needed more space and wanted to add on a great room of the kitchen. I was tasked with creating a kitchen that fit into todays modern world but celebrated the "old house" details. Exposed beams, uneven floors, posts and storage needs where all high on the to do and worry list! Working in a full size pantry with counters and a deep freeze provided that function and charm we were all hoping for in this new kitchen. A custom blue inset island with a beautiful 2" thick honed Danby marble top works nicely in the open concept feel. Glass fronted cabinets, blue and white tile and a hint of red in the back wall of the pantry all have a nod to the historic roots of the property and subtle reminder to it's part in the American Revolution. These homeowner loves to entertain friends and family. They wanted a new space that had a farmhouse look and feel. We removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room. Then we closed off the staircase coming from upstairs into the kitchen. We changed the dining room ceiling from a tray ceiling to a flat ceiling. These changes allowed us to incorporate the old dining room and kitchen to make a lavish area for entertaining friends and family. The perimeter cabinets are from Showplace featuring the Marquis door style in soft white with a pewter glaze and are accented by Heirloom Gray countertops. The contrasting island cabinets are from Showplace in smoky blue with the Marquis door style and are accented by Cosmos Venato countertops. The microwave is located conveniently in the island helping to avoid clutter on the countertops. The pantry is concealed behind a rustic alder barn door which when closed is located beside a magnetic chalkboard for displaying their child’s artwork The porcelain enamel farm sink has an oil rubbed bronze faucet which matches the pot filler located behind the Wolfe range on the subway glass tile. The new large kitchen window provides plenty of natural light. The focal point of this kitchen is the Wolfe range with the custom Ventahood exhaust hood with copper accents with blends perfectly with the oil rubbed bronze faucet and pot filler.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space.
