Homework Design.Build.RemodelThis was a large remodel in a small space! We brought in more natural light by removing the toilet wall and door. We replaced the tub with a custom floor to ceiling shower and a 70" tall custom shower niche! Hello Costco shampoo bottles! We also installed grey glass subway tile all the way to the vaulted ceiling. New floor tile and trim throughout the space. This was a fun project!

A tired primary bathroom, with varying ceiling heights and a beige-on-beige color scheme, was screaming for love. Squaring the room and adding natural materials erased the memory of the lack luster space and converted it to a bright and welcoming spa oasis. The home was a new build in 2005 and it looked like all the builder’s material choices remained. The client was clear on their design direction but were challenged by the differing ceiling heights and were looking to hire a design-build firm that could resolve that issue.
This local Glen Ellyn couple found us on Instagram (@kitchenstudioge, follow us ?). They loved our designs and felt like we fit their style. They requested a full primary bath renovation to include a large shower, soaking tub, double vanity with storage options, and heated floors. The wife also really wanted a separate make-up vanity. The biggest challenge presented to us was to architecturally marry the various ceiling heights and deliver a streamlined design.
The existing layout worked well for the couple, so we kept everything in place, except we enlarged the shower and replaced the built-in tub with a lovely free-standing model. We also added a sitting make-up vanity. We were able to eliminate the awkward ceiling lines by extending all the walls to the highest level. Then, to accommodate the sprinklers and HVAC, lowered the ceiling height over the entrance and shower area which then opens to the 2-story vanity and tub area. Very dramatic!
This high-end home deserved high-end fixtures. The homeowners also quickly realized they loved the look of natural marble and wanted to use as much of it as possible in their new bath. They chose a marble slab from the stone yard for the countertops and back splash, and we found complimentary marble tile for the shower. The homeowners also liked the idea of mixing metals in their new posh bathroom and loved the look of black, gold, and chrome.
Although our clients were very clear on their style, they were having a difficult time pulling it all together and envisioning the final product. As interior designers it is our job to translate and elevate our clients’ ideas into a deliverable design. We presented the homeowners with mood boards and 3D renderings of our modern, clean, white marble design. Since the color scheme was relatively neutral, at the homeowner’s request, we decided to add of interest with the patterns and shapes in the room.
We were first inspired by the shower floor tile with its circular/linear motif. We designed the cabinetry, floor and wall tiles, mirrors, cabinet pulls, and wainscoting to have a square or rectangular shape, and then to create interest we added perfectly placed circles to contrast with the rectangular shapes. The globe shaped chandelier against the square wall trim is a delightful yet subtle juxtaposition.
The clients were overjoyed with our interpretation of their vision and impressed with the level of detail we brought to the project. It’s one thing to know how you want a space to look, but it takes a special set of skills to create the design and see it thorough to implementation. I need to work with pre existing black aluminium window frames, so hence the addition of black tapware.
To provide texture to the space, I designed the custom made vanity and added fluting to the panels. To create a 'beachy" but not cliched feel, I used a gorgeous Terrazzo bench top by Vulcano tiles here in Australia.
I chose mosaic wall tiles via Surface Gallery in Stanmore in Sydney's inner West,, to add some texture to the walls.
To work with the rest of the house I used some timber look tiles from Beaumont Tiles, to create a warm and fuzzy feel.

Vision DesignThe bathroom had been sort of pieced together over multiple remodels over 75 years. Even thought the fixtures stayed virtually in the same locations, all the systems and materials were updated.
Metropolis Drafting and Construction IncThe house's second bathroom was only half a bath with an access door at the dining area.
We extended the bathroom by an additional 36" into the family room and relocated the entry door to be in the minor hallway leading to the family room as well.
A classical transitional bathroom with white crayon style tile on the walls, including the entire wall of the toilet and the vanity.
The alcove tub has a barn door style glass shower enclosure. and the color scheme is a classical white/gold/blue mix.
Chester County Kitchen & BathOrnate Downingtown, PA Master Bath remodel. Our design team moved and redesigned everything! Classic Cherry Cabinetry by Echelon in the Langdon door with mocha finish was chosen for the generous, new double vanity and tub skirt. Storage is not an issue with this vanity design. A large neo angle shower and attached tub deck with tiled walls and granite capped surfaces looks stunning. Using a clear frameless glass shower surround always lets in alot of natural light into the shower. The new shower half walls still give it a private feel. Natural toned tile with subtle accents adds to the classic styling.

However, if you’ve dreamt of a roll-top bath or a walk-in shower with heating at, then you might want to take longer looking for each item individually. Choosing all white elements will obviously tie everything together, but also think about the style you’re going for – ultra modern taps will clash with traditional Victorian-style wash basins. And it’s probably good to consider your flooring or surfaces, and walls to make sure everything will complement. After you’ve made sure your light fittings are safe and to-code, you can consider the type and style you’d like as your working through your bathroom ideas. When it comes to flooring, tiles will be durable, easy to clean and deal well with water, but if you want something different you could go with modern concrete, traditional or country-style treated wooden floorboards, or a bit more quirky bamboo, cork or vinyl.
