Penny Black Interiors LLC.The architecture of this mid-century ranch in Portland’s West Hills oozes modernism’s core values. We wanted to focus on areas of the home that didn’t maximize the architectural beauty. The Client—a family of three, with Lucy the Great Dane, wanted to improve what was existing and update the kitchen and Jack and Jill Bathrooms, add some cool storage solutions and generally revamp the house.
We totally reimagined the entry to provide a “wow” moment for all to enjoy whilst entering the property. A giant pivot door was used to replace the dated solid wood door and side light.
We designed and built new open cabinetry in the kitchen allowing for more light in what was a dark spot. The kitchen got a makeover by reconfiguring the key elements and new concrete flooring, new stove, hood, bar, counter top, and a new lighting plan.

Utilising a neutral palette while including luxurious textures and high-end fixtures and fittings, truly makes this home an interior design dream. While the bathrooms feature a coast-contemporary feel, the bedrooms and entryway boast something a little more European in décor and design. This neat blend of styles gives this family home that true ‘Hampton’s living’ feel with eclectic, yet light and airy spaces.

The Mirror replaces a small pair of Medicine Cabinet-
and fits wall-to-wall, yet is pulled away from the wall to allow for special
linear incandescent lighting to be placed beneath the lower edge of the mirror.
There is also LED lighting beneath the Vanity- to
create the illusion, that the Vanity appears as if it's "hovering"
above the sparkling white marble mosaic tiled floor.
The Light Cover I created hides some lame 1970's Hollywood style light fixture-
that for budgetary reasons we chose to "work around".
The Vanity is an IKEA-hack...the freestanding sideboard had it's legs removed-and was modified to
accomodate the plumbing- as a wall hung unit.
The Matt White Corian CounterTop was engineered to prevent the crappy
finish of IKEA's melamine covered top, to be affected by any water.
The same White Corian was used for baseboard moldings as well!
Brilliant - eh?
The sink faucet- had to be shortened to "fit" the sinks drain- a trip to Adolfos shop
allowed for it to be soldered>reground>and later reChrome plated and polished.

York House DesignsBecause the entire bathroom used to be a laundry cupboard, the client was really keen that when converting it into an ensuite, we were able to retain some really useful and beautiful laundry storage. By creating both the laundry cupboard and the shower area completely custom on site, we were able to maximise both areas. And it turned out beautifully.
KohlerBuilt in the early 1900s, this brownstone’s 83-square-foot bathroom had seen better days. Upgrades like a furniture-style vanity and oil-rubbed bronze faucetry preserve its vintage feel while adding modern functionality.
