Advance Design Studio, Ltd.This 1930's Barrington Hills farmhouse was in need of some TLC when it was purchased by this southern family of five who planned to make it their new home. The renovation taken on by Advance Design Studio's designer Scott Christensen and master carpenter Justin Davis included a custom porch, custom built in cabinetry in the living room and children's bedrooms, 2 children's on-suite baths, a guest powder room, a fabulous new master bath with custom closet and makeup area, a new upstairs laundry room, a workout basement, a mud room, new flooring and custom wainscot stairs with planked walls and ceilings throughout the home.
The home's original mechanicals were in dire need of updating, so HVAC, plumbing and electrical were all replaced with newer materials and equipment. A dramatic change to the exterior took place with the addition of a quaint standing seam metal roofed farmhouse porch perfect for sipping lemonade on a lazy hot summer day.
In addition to the changes to the home, a guest house on the property underwent a major transformation as well. Newly outfitted with updated gas and electric, a new stacking washer/dryer space was created along with an updated bath complete with a glass enclosed shower, something the bath did not previously have. A beautiful kitchenette with ample cabinetry space, refrigeration and a sink was transformed as well to provide all the comforts of home for guests visiting at the classic cottage retreat.
The biggest design challenge was to keep in line with the charm the old home possessed, all the while giving the family all the convenience and efficiency of modern functioning amenities. One of the most interesting uses of material was the porcelain "wood-looking" tile used in all the baths and most of the home's common areas. All the efficiency of porcelain tile, with the nostalgic look and feel of worn and weathered hardwood floors. The home’s casual entry has an 8" rustic antique barn wood look porcelain tile in a rich brown to create a warm and welcoming first impression.
Painted distressed cabinetry in muted shades of gray/green was used in the powder room to bring out the rustic feel of the space which was accentuated with wood planked walls and ceilings. Fresh white painted shaker cabinetry was used throughout the rest of the rooms, accentuated by bright chrome fixtures and muted pastel tones to create a calm and relaxing feeling throughout the home.
Custom cabinetry was designed and built by Advance Design specifically for a large 70” TV in the living room, for each of the children’s bedroom’s built in storage, custom closets, and book shelves, and for a mudroom fit with custom niches for each family member by name.
The ample master bath was fitted with double vanity areas in white. A generous shower with a bench features classic white subway tiles and light blue/green glass accents, as well as a large free standing soaking tub nestled under a window with double sconces to dim while relaxing in a luxurious bath. A custom classic white bookcase for plush towels greets you as you enter the sanctuary bath.
Cabinet-S-TopIn this master bath a Siteline Frameless vanity in the Walton Shaker door style was installed with matching mirrors. Corian White Onyx was installed on the countertops, shower threshold and on the niche ledges. Crossville Night Night Color Box 3” x 3” tile was installed on the shower floor. Arctic white gloss subway tile was installed on the shower walls. Daltile Color Wheel Arctic white gloss 1 x 3 herringbone tile was installed on the walls around the tub and in the back of the niche. Fusion Tetra 6 globe vanity light fixture in brushed nickel with oval frosted globes. Sterling Spectacle 60” oval acrylic freestanding bathtub in white with Moen Eva collection. 12” x 24” Adura Flex luxury vinyl tile is installed on the floor.

A luscious green bathroom design is complemented by matt black accents and unique platform for a feature bath.
The Brief
The aim of this project was to transform a former bedroom into a contemporary family bathroom, complete with a walk-in shower and freestanding bath.
This Storrington client had some strong design ideas, favouring a green theme with contemporary additions to modernise the space.
Storage was also a key design element. To help minimise clutter and create space for decorative items an inventive solution was required.
Design Elements
The design utilises some key desirables from the client as well as some clever suggestions from our bathroom designer Martin.
The green theme has been deployed spectacularly, with metro tiles utilised as a strong accent within the shower area and multiple storage niches. All other walls make use of neutral matt white tiles at half height, with William Morris wallpaper used as a leafy and natural addition to the space.
A freestanding bath has been placed central to the window as a focal point. The bathing area is raised to create separation within the room, and three pendant lights fitted above help to create a relaxing ambience for bathing.
Special Inclusions
Storage was an important part of the design.
A wall hung storage unit has been chosen in a Fjord Green Gloss finish, which works well with green tiling and the wallpaper choice. Elsewhere plenty of storage niches feature within the room. These add storage for everyday essentials, decorative items, and conceal items the client may not want on display.
A sizeable walk-in shower was also required as part of the renovation, with designer Martin opting for a Crosswater enclosure in a matt black finish. The matt black finish teams well with other accents in the room like the Vado brassware and Eastbrook towel rail.
Project Highlight
The platformed bathing area is a great highlight of this family bathroom space.
It delivers upon the freestanding bath requirement of the brief, with soothing lighting additions that elevate the design. Wood-effect porcelain floor tiling adds an additional natural element to this renovation.
The End Result
The end result is a complete transformation from the former bedroom that utilised this space.

Studio 76 Kitchens and BathsA functional space with easy flow through this master bath into the custom closets also allowed for dual vessel vanity sinks, bath mirrors and traditional light fixtures. The patterned custom tile floor was designed to follow the layout of the bath fixtures which include a freestanding tub, custom shower and two tall utility cabinets for extra storage. A cottage estate décor theme was selected by designers from Studio 76 Kitchens and Baths together with the homeowners.

Croes RenovationsA white 66" freestanding tub takes up less physical and visual space than the previous built-in tub and allowed for an expanded shower. The original layout had the sinks on opposite sides of the room. Joining the sinks in a single vanity over 8' allowed the space for a huge linen closet. Custom wainscoting keeps the traditional feel of the rest of the home
L/L Design - Build - FurnishThis custom vanity is the perfect balance of the white marble and porcelain tile used in this large master restroom. The crystal and chrome sconces set the stage for the beauty to be appreciated in this spa-like space. The soft green walls complements the green veining in the marble backsplash, and is subtle with the quartz countertop.

You could choose pale colours and iridescent tiles that reflect the light, keep walls and ceilings the same colour and texture, and use complementary shades throughout the bathroom– fewer contrasts and transitions will help maintain the sense of space. Floating bathroom units also draw the eye to visible floor space underneath them, and clear glass shower screens will keep the room feeling open and airy. Finishing touches like artfully placed large mirrors will also make small bathrooms appear more expansive.9
