What’s the next best thing to a tropical vacation in the middle of a Chicago winter? Well, how about a tropical themed bath that works year round? The goal of this bath was just that, to bring some fun, whimsy and tropical vibes!
We started out by making some updates to the built in bookcase leading into the bath. It got an easy update by removing all the stained trim and creating a simple arched opening with a few floating shelves for a much cleaner and up-to-date look. We love the simplicity of this arch in the space.
Now, into the bathroom design. Our client fell in love with this beautiful handmade tile featuring tropical birds and flowers and featuring bright, vibrant colors. We played off the tile to come up with the pallet for the rest of the space. The cabinetry and trim is a custom teal-blue paint that perfectly picks up on the blue in the tile. The gold hardware, lighting and mirror also coordinate with the colors in the tile.
Because the house is a 1930’s tudor, we played homage to that by using a simple black and white hex pattern on the floor and retro style hardware that keep the whole space feeling vintage appropriate. We chose a wall mount unpolished brass hardware faucet which almost gives the feel of a tropical fountain. It just works. The arched mirror continues the arch theme from the bookcase.
For the shower, we chose a coordinating antique white tile with the same tropical tile featured in a shampoo niche where we carefully worked to get a little bird almost standing on the niche itself. We carried the gold fixtures into the shower, and instead of a shower door, the shower features a simple hinged glass panel that is easy to clean and allows for easy access to the shower controls.

Annette Jaffe InteriorsAJI worked with a family of five to design their dream beach home filled with personality and charm. We chose a soft, peaceful neutral palette to create a bright, airy appeal. The open-concept kitchen and living area offer plenty of space for entertaining. In the kitchen, we selected beautiful sand-colored cabinets in the kitchen to recreate a beachy vibe. The client's treasured artworks were incorporated into the decor, creating stunning focal points throughout the home. The gorgeous roof deck offers beautiful views from the bay to the beach. We added comfortable furniture, a bar, and barbecue areas, ensuring this is the favorite hangout spot for family and friends.

BANDD DESIGNA large island, soft colors, and modern interiors were used to give this Austin kitchen a contemporary update. We created a more usable layout and improved functionality by adding custom cabinetry, charging drawers, wall-mounted shelves, and an appliance garage. Modern pendant lights, double bowl hammered copper apron kitchen sink, geometric glass chandelier, and black rattan kitchen chairs add sophistication to the kitchen. After the kitchen, our Austin studio worked on this client’s bathroom remodeling project to design a modern, bright, and polished space. We started with a light, soothing color palette and two large mirrors to create an open, airy vibe. Modern sconces and striking lighting add a sophisticated touch. And finally, a beautiful tub creates a relaxing, luxurious, spa-like appeal to the space.

Courtney Thomas DesignOur La Cañada studio designed this lovely home, keeping with the fun, cheerful personalities of the homeowner. The entry runner from Annie Selke is the perfect introduction to the house and its playful palette, adding a welcoming appeal. In the dining room, a beautiful, iconic Schumacher wallpaper was one of our happy finishes whose vines and garden colors begged for more vibrant colors to complement it. So we added bold green color to the trims, doors, and windows, enhancing the playful appeal. In the family room, we used a soft palette with pale blue, soft grays, and warm corals, reminiscent of pastel house palettes and crisp white trim that reflects the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches of Bermuda! The formal living room looks elegant and sophisticated, with beautiful furniture in soft blue and pastel green. The curtains nicely complement the space, and the gorgeous wooden center table anchors the space beautifully. In the kitchen, we added a custom-built, happy blue island that sits beneath the house’s namesake fabric, Hydrangea Heaven.

Capital Design LLCUpscale fixtures, finishes and attention to detail make this expansive master bathroom a stunner. Marble tile in cream and soft pink set a warm tone. If your bathroom is a small space in your home where you don’t spend much time, it’s time to think about alternatives. After you’ve made sure your light fittings are safe and to-code, you can consider the type and style you’d like as your working through your bathroom ideas. The great thing is that both floor tiles and wall tiles come in a huge variety of sizes, styles, colours and patterns, so you can remodel your room completely with whatever tile choices fit with your bathroom ideas. When it comes to flooring, tiles will be durable, easy to clean and deal well with water, but if you want something different you could go with modern concrete, traditional or country-style treated wooden floorboards, or a bit more quirky bamboo, cork or vinyl. What to do with small bathrooms?
The best small bathroom ideas will maximise the space you have. From installing a bidet to simple decorative tips there are plenty of things you can do to make it look bigger. Recessed shelves can make a huge difference both visually and practically to small bathrooms, so if you are able to have these installed when your walls are being renovated you could add some to your shower or sink area. You could choose pale colours and iridescent tiles that reflect the light, keep walls and ceilings the same colour and texture, and use complementary shades throughout the bathroom– fewer contrasts and transitions will help maintain the sense of space. Floating bathroom units also draw the eye to visible floor space underneath them, and clear glass shower screens will keep the room feeling open and airy. Finishing touches like artfully placed large mirrors will also make small bathrooms appear more expansive.7
