The only thing more depressing than a dark basement is a beige on beige basement in the Pacific Northwest. With the global pandemic raging on, my clients were looking to add extra livable space in their home with a home office and workout studio. Our goal was to make this space feel like you're connected to nature and fun social activities that were once a main part of our lives. We used color, naturescapes and soft textures to turn this basement from bland beige to fun, warm and inviting.

The game room is the ideal spot for football games, card games, and cigars. The ventilation system prevents smoke from going to other areas of the house and is functional for the client's love of cigars. The new space has plenty of storage and display area, with custom open shelving, lockable drawers, and a hidden beverage cooler paneled to look balanced with the other cabinets. The monochrome navy color scheme brings a masculine feeling, while not compromising the soft textures of the rug and seating.

This basement was completely renovated to add dimension and light in. This customer used our Hand Hewn Faux Wood Beams in the finish Cinnamon to complete this design. He said this about the project, "We turned an unused basement into a family game room. The faux beams provided a sense of maturity and tradition, matched with the youthfulness of gaming tables." Submitted to us by DuVal Designs LLC.

By creating distinct zones based off the different activities they would be used for, we were able to start developing a flow using design and architectural elements. The delineation between tv area and the games space was created using open custom millwork. The games area in the back of the space also features an accent wall that coordinates with the framed effect the millwork creates.

The use of bulkhead details throughout the space allows for further division between the office, music, tv and games areas. The wall niches, lighting, paint and wallpaper, were all choices made to draw the eye around the space while still visually linking the separated areas together.

Importantly, the homeowners didn’t want their basement to function as a TV room, as they have a separate theater for movie watching. Rather, they wanted this space to facilitate conversation and provide room for games. So instead of adding a TV and a couch, we designed and built a comfortable, chic booth with shelving in a deep walnut tone. Also, to keep the booth cohesive with the rest of the house, we carried many of the same blue finishes from upstairs down to the basement. We love the lux tufted velvet on the seat and the shimmering wall treatment surrounding the booth.

The scope was a stimulating child's area for my client's grandchildren, which was also aesthetically pleasing to other users of the basement too! We developed a story that had personal connections so that the children could also relate to the detail of the wall wrap. They love it!

This games room is a Liverpool FC / F1 fan's dream. With state of the art sound systems, lighting and smart TV it's invigorated refurbishment is set off to full effect. Sometimes even the simplest of tasks can bring about unexpected hurdles and getting the lighting accurately spaced proved a challenge in this basement conversion ... but with clever staff we got there. Coved uplighting in a soft white adds warmth to the optical allusion of greater height and the Zoffany textured wallpaper gives a 3 dimensional luxury mount for the owners' extensive memorabilia. A bespoke external door allows light to flood in, and the designer carpet, traced and imported from Holland, via Denmark thanks to Global Flooring Studio, gives a great sense of the industrial when next to the steal framed staircase (more of that soon).
