In the heart of the McIntyre Historic District, a Registered National Historic Landmark of Salem, you'll find an extraordinary array of fine residential period homes. Hidden behind many of these homes are lovely private garden spaces.
The recreation of this space began with the removal of a large wooden deck and staircase. In doing so, we visually extended and opened up the yard for an opportunity to create three distinct garden rooms. A graceful fieldstone and bluestone staircase leads you from the home onto a bluestone terrace large enough for entertaining. Two additional garden spaces provide intimate and quiet seating areas integrated in the herbaceous borders and plantings.

An exquisite piece of custom architectural poured concrete. Although relatively flat, the careful detailing enabled a series of curved steps leading up to the main entrance. Curved on one side and straight on the other - the offset corners feature an imported low bollard light fixture from Louis Poulson Lighting a Danish company that makes a high end product. Wiarton stone tiles have been inlaid and mortared into the pathway treads.

The addition of the pergola and deck (where once there was a cramped ugly tiled porch) add to the appeal. A combination of drought tolerant perennials flourish here including Salvia leucantha, clipped Browalia and Gaillardias. The metal obelisks support floxgloves and delphiniums in spring.

This front yard features a seating area and jar fountain, ringed by aromatic native plantings of California Lilac, Manzanita, Cleveland Sage. A meadow-style planting of native sedge grasses create soft look in the foreground, and new concrete pavers add a modern touch. We also believe the project’s driveway to be among the prettiest we’ve created or seen: a ribbon of stones and grasses now meanders along a Hollywood-style center planting area.

Re-design of this narrow town garden. Circles break up the shape and re-direct the eye creating a series of areas to sit and enjoy the garden.

This beautiful, all-cedar privacy fence warmly welcomes visitors and keeps the eyes looking around the yard. The arbor extends over the patio to continue the green-black trim to better frame the white house. The HVAC units have been fenced in with a visual screen that lets airflow through - and the panels are removable for maintenance access. We also replaced the old planter boxes on the front windows.
