This project concerned an enlargement of a 1950s brick built, three-bedroom house including a reconfiguration of the house at the rear to provide a kitchen/family room and utility space. In addition to this a timber framed work studio in the lower section of the garden was constructed.
Architecturally, whilst the street façade is extended to match the existing, the rear of the house differentiates old and new with rendered masonry, sedum roof and large triple glazed openings relating to both garden and wider view. The internal design mediates between the different levels of the site using this step to create a fireplace, seating and a log store.
Aside from the live-work scenario and bike parking facilities, it is the low energy strategy which is most innovative in this project: energy demand reduction was achieved through insulating the existing house and upgrading the windows; space heating provided by a gasifying log boiler; 60% of hot water demand from a solar thermal roof top installation and ;8.7 sqm of Photo-voltaic array to provide a substantial part of the household’s electricity demands. Rainwater too, is collected to feed the garden tap and provide for the low flush w.c.s and washing machine.
