Most landlords seem to be willing to let you make changes as long as you change it back when you move out. (I suspect that sometimes the landlord decides the new version is better and keeps the change.) I can't think of any reason why they would object to changes that can be undone. After all, if you don't change it back to their satisfaction, they can always keep all or a portion of your security deposit to compensate them.

We once rented a huge ground level 5 bedroom HOME in QLD; complete with rainforest/Bali backyard, & inground pool with rock waterfall. EVERY SINGLE ROOM right down to the toilets & ensuite, were painted a different colour and I mean 'bright' Bali colours. I'm an extremely neutral minimalist so I paid over $2000 to get the whole house painted a neutral colour throughout. It opened it right up & with a lot of timber and the beautiful greenery outside it looked stunning making a quiet understatement.
