4. Work in a window seat
We’re seeing more and more projects on Houzz swerving the classic wall of glazed doors and this dining space shows just why it can be a good option.
Installing a window here, rather than floor-to-ceiling glass, means there’s space for the table in this corner, thanks to the addition of built-in bench seating.
Oak flooring by Wooden Floors UK complements the neutral colour scheme and pale wood table and chairs.

3. Let in the light
Here, in a side return extension by Edwards Rensen Architects, the ceiling and end wall in this airy dining space are glass. The effect remains characterful, thanks to green-framed glazing and pink-painted steels surrounding the area.
What else warms up the space is the bare wood and brick combo that form part of the fabric of the building and built-in joinery, along with plenty of plants, views across the garden, and an interesting overhead light fitting that takes the flexible arm idea mentioned above to the next level.

2. Welcome wall sconces
It can be tricky to position pendant lighting around a rooflight and some simply prefer to leave sightlines clear. The solution in this dining nook by David Tenters of Herringbone Kitchens? Flexible-arm wall lights, which cast a soft glow across the characterful table and bentwood chairs and help to bring a sense of symmetry to the dining area.
Pretty wallpaper makes a nice foil for the dark blue and brass lights, while the green-painted bench below matches the colours used in a large utility-pantry visible from the kitchen.

1. Build in a banquette
Ta-da! The most popular dining space right now is this lovely nook. Bench seating is great, because it allows a little flex on numbers at the table – there’s room for a little one or two if friends or family with young children come over to eat. If you have a corner alcove, it can be a particularly good use of the space, perhaps with a round table.
In this project, interior designer Melanie Tomlinson has created a generous, horseshoe-shaped banquette, which frames the beautiful glazing, while transparent lighting ensures nothing detracts from the striking feature behind it. Drawer storage beneath makes practical use of the seating space and means the seat pads can be fixed for a slick look.
Let’s enjoy these colours for a second, too: sage green, soft white, and those lovely dark wood chairs make for a harmonious trio.

In at number five is this calm, inviting room by Dorota Hrstic of Miri Design. When she started work on this new-build house, her brief was to add character – which is how this stunning table came to be.
Dorota commissioned the bespoke design from joiners Made With Trees to fit perfectly in the space. She wanted to warm up the room with her choice of materials and shapes, and says, “We couldn’t find something the right size and we wanted soft edges and natural wood, so we commissioned this instead.”
Fluted timber panels form a lovely textured base, which contrasts with the smooth oak top. Classic Wishbone chairs complement the table, while a paper pendant provides soft, diffused lighting.
Adding to the functionality of the dining space is a practical – also bespoke – storage area to house drinks appliances and other items. “We created a little tea corner next to the table,” Dorota says.
