A Halifax deck builder shows how to plan the perfect place for relaxing outside

Who: Maurice Meagher of Archadeck of Nova Scotia
Where: Halifax, Nova Scotia
In his own words: “People are busy. They have family, work and other activities on the go. They want someone to make the process easier, because DIY isn’t usually an option.”
It’s hard to beat the feeling of relaxing in a beautiful outdoor space that’s an extension of your home. Maurice Meagher, the owner of Archadeck of Nova Scotia in Halifax, says many people consider such spaces a necessary element of their lifestyle.
“Outdoor living has shifted, and it’s much more important than it was decades ago,” Meagher says. “It’s now an integral part of how many people live, so they place more value on how they want to use the space.”

Forget reality TV. “Thanks to the internet and home improvement reality shows, homeowners are far more educated than they used to be,” Meagher says. “What’s missing is an understanding of realistic timelines, processes and budgets. We help clients understand the steps involved in building an outdoor space: where to start, how to get where they want to be and how long it will take.”
Select the right contractor. Planning and building an outdoor space is a big deal, so you’ll want to make sure you trust the team you’re working with. “Do a little research to be certain you’ve entrusted your home to a company that conducts business with professionalism, is committed to high-quality standards, has excellent client references and offers a written warranty,” Meagher advises.

1. Don’t Let Winter Stop You
People in northern climates often face harsh winters and don’t usually have the opportunity to use an outdoor space all year. However, with some creative planning, sunrooms can still be used year-round, Meagher says.
“Our clients in Bedford were looking for a new outdoor space to enjoy during every season,” he says. “They wanted to incorporate a hot tub, so we designed an outdoor living area that included a four-season sunroom with a stone patio and composite deck for their hot tub. It’s a perfect space to enjoy all year long.”

2. Consider How You’ll Use It
You know you want a great outdoor space, but it’s important to think about how you’ll actually use it, Meagher says. “Our Pictou County clients were looking for an outdoor space that would give them multiple dining and entertaining areas,” he says. “They had oceanfront property surrounded by forest, so we designed a space that took advantage of the spectacular view, a screened dining area protected from bugs and a space to use throughout the day and night for relaxed gatherings.”

3. Get a Guarantee
Creating an outdoor space can be a significant investment of time and money, so choose a company that warranties its work, Meagher says. He suggests asking what kind of guarantees will be in place for workmanship and structural items, and whether there are any additional third-party guarantees on the project’s completion and materials.
“When this deck project in Beaverbank was completed, we provided the clients with a written warranty for workmanship of one year and structural integrity of five years,” he says. “It was also backed by a third-party national warranty program. It’s confidence and peace of mind that you deserve as a client and homeowner.”
