Pro Spotlight: How to Choose the Right Remodelers for You
A New Jersey home improvement remodeler shares how to find a rewarding relationship for your renovation

Who: Christopher Fontana of Magnolia Home Remodeling Group
Where: Union, New Jersey
In his own words: “I’ve learned to never stop learning. If you’re not learning and adapting, you’re doing your client a disservice.”
The most challenging part of the remodeling process is finding the right project partners. “Even if a business checks all the boxes, finding a good fit comes down to this X factor of feeling comfortable,” says Chris Fontana, the vice president and co-owner of Magnolia Home Remodeling Group. As a co-founder and manager of the family-owned construction and remodeling business since 1996, Fontana knows trust is key. “It’s a really special circumstance,” he says. “Having a client trust you with their hard-earned money and without holding back means everything.”

Founded on family. Fontana’s roots in renovation and construction grew from his involvement in a family remodeling business at an early age. “I always enjoyed working on homes and seeing the process through from planning to execution,” he says. “I love that feeling of excitement when the client is satisfied and can see how their ideas came to life.” In college, Fontana met not only his future wife, but also his future business partner in his brother-in-law. “We got along so well we decided to go into business together,” he says. “It is a true family-owned and -operated business.”
1. Communication and Continual Feedback
For Fontana and his team, constant communication is key to project success. “The biggest thing is to successfully set expectations at the beginning of the project,” he says. “Once we discuss the scope and budget, we can figure out how to give you the best value.” Designated project managers are on site at least every other day. But as an added step in the process, Magnolia Home Remodeling Group works every day to listen to clients’ feedback and take it to heart. “We don’t let things lie,” Fontana says. “We’re always looking to grow and improve.”
At this Flemington, New Jersey, home, the owners wanted to go all-out on a Brooklyn-style brewpub in their basement space. Exposed ceiling beams and brick walls, wood cabinetry, swirling quartz countertops and vinyl plank floors create a lux clubhouse vibe. A theater area, shuffleboard table and full bathroom make this the ultimate room for entertaining.

2. Strong Relationships and Risk Mitigation
Every company needs to make a profit, but it’s important to seek out a professional team that will keep your best interests in mind. “Most of our clients rely on us because they’re really big on risk mitigation, and a relationship with our company is a no-risk relationship,” Fontana says. “Regardless of the price of the job, our clients can feel comfortable knowing that the work will get done in an ethical and moral way.”
Magnolia Home Remodeling Group also offers architectural and design services to help guide clients through the entire experience. “We’re the experts, so we’re happy to help by sharing all our experiences — not just steering people toward profit,” Fontana says.
For this North Jersey home, the clients wanted to design an all-white but still warm transitional-style kitchen. Fontana’s team delivered with white paneling and cabinetry, matte white appliances, a softly hued oak island and white oak flooring, as well as a striking but subtle marble backsplash.

3. Solid History and Authenticity
As a homeowner, you naturally want to give careful thought to whom you let in your home. “There are a lot of good businesses out there, you just have to use the right barometer to find them,” Fontana says. The most important factor consumers should weigh is a solid reputation in the renovation business. “How long has the company been around?” Fontana says. “How many reviews are available? Who is actually working on the job and what type of oversight is there? Are they affiliated with their vendors?”
With decades of experience and a continued dedication to growing and learning, Magnolia Home Remodeling Group offers an additional asset for its clients: versatility. “We’re a full-service operation,” Fontana says. “If we’re working with you on an addition, we can also replace your roof or build you a deck with the same attention to detail.” At this New Jersey home, the Magnolia team totally transformed the house’s facade with a wraparound composite deck in an antique leather shade, along with a classic black aluminum drink rail.
