Who: Nina Kati of Nina Kati Interior Design Feng Shui
Where: Ireland
In her words: “Authentic feng shui goes way beyond simply redesigning a space. It’s about maximising your health, relationships and wealth, and is about optimising energies, reducing stresses, creating a supportive environment, and positively transforming both you and your home.”
Whether you’re about to embark on a new build, a huge renovation or you’re simply planning to overhaul an existing space, the pressure of making decisions on time, stay within budget and source on-trend products can often cause you to steer away from your initial ideas and lose that unique personal touch. So, imagine a specialist devising a decisive project plan from the outset, knowing the transformational outcome will make your world a whole lot better and your life so much simpler…
Sound too good to be true? Well, for Nina Kati, Ireland’s leading consulting feng shui interior designer, and her many satisfied clients, it’s a wonderful reality. Using a powerful combination of conceptual design ideas and unique holistic solutions, Nina creates spaces that match, balance and harmonise with your personal energies and lifestyle, rather than simply adhering to decorating principles, ensuring a happier, healthier and stress-free home. “Authentic feng shui considers your home to be your ‘outer skin’ – the roof the skull, the door the mouth, and the indoor environment even has a microbiome similar to your gut. Therefore, your home should be tailored to uniquely suit you and your family’s energies, almost like a DNA match creating that special ‘oneness’ between you and your spaces.”

Positive energy. Prior to setting up her professional practice in design, in 2000, Nina studied under a Chinese feng shui master for two years, to learn about authentic feng shui for people and buildings. She also studied under an Oriental master practitioner to learn about authentic feng shui for the mind and emotional wellbeing, the body and physical vitality, and the spirit and inner self. She now provides spatial design and authentic feng shui services to a wide range of clients, including homeowners, architects, developers, corporate businesses, retailers and hoteliers.
During a very personalised one-to-one consultation, Nina uses her specialist knowledge to assess the energies within your home, establishes critical data based on timing, profiles family members from their birthdates, and analyses the surrounding landscape, site, and interior. She then offers design solutions that not only look beautiful and feel serene, but also ensure you live a more positive and productive life in a happier and healthier home.

Unlock your home’s potential. Whether you’re looking to declutter, redecorate, buy new or sell up, Nina’s philosophy of living more simply and naturally is always reflected in her interiors and gardens. “Having less creates more headspace and leaves room for personal development and growth, inviting more into your life, so you have freedom to live to the fullest,” she says.
Based on each individual’s energies and personality, Nina looks to create positive, welcoming and ambient spaces by using energising colours, uplifting patterns and comforting textures, and also strives to design study spaces and workspaces that are inspiring and motivating. “Our spaces affect us mentally, emotionally, and physically,” she says. “Our living spaces should be individualised, harmonised and energised so we are happier and healthier, and our workplaces should inspire and motivate us to be creative, productive and successful. A harmonised, healthier place is the foundation for a happier, wealthier life.”

1. Create a Healthier Home That Nurtures
Living in a visually stimulated era where screen-based media is dominating much of our lives, we are spending more time indoors, whether that’s relaxing, entertaining, studying, working or shopping. Yet research shows that one in six EU homes does not meet the minimum standards of a healthy household. For example, poor indoor air quality, insufficient light and lack of thermal insulation affects our physical health, leading to stress, worry and anxiety, which in turn impacts our mental health.
In this seaside holiday house in Ireland, Nina nurtures the needs of the family by creating a welcoming feel and setting the scene for harmonious social interaction through furniture layout and energising colours and patterns that encourage holiday fun for all ages. She also re-natured the space by connecting it with the surrounding coastal landscape through sensory associations. “As well as creating a home that’s relaxing and full of personal charm, it’s important to encourage a healthy environment by allowing sunlight to penetrate the interior to naturally cleanse bacteria, and oxygenating your home regularly via ventilation. This will help reduce harmful levels of chemicals that build up from man-made materials in the indoor environment,” says Nina.

2. Boost Your Homes’ Energy (and Your Bank Balance)
Revitalising dark, tired spaces with uplifting colours, patterns and lighting can positively affect your psyche and make you feel happier and energised, while employing authentic feng shui design principles to the layout of your new spaces will also encourage harmony. For example, in a kitchen, the sink and cooker should not be positioned opposite one another, as fire and water are opposed and can be a major cause of family discord – even marital break-up! Repurposing before replacing is also part of feng shui philosophy, to help reduce your energy footprint and save yourself money.
In this kitchen renovation in a bungalow in Ireland, Nina
tailored the family’s personal energies to the activities of cooking, eating and entertaining and created a calm, convivial, nourishing and practical space. The whole family were involved in the concept, design and execution of the scheme, such as choosing original paintings, objects d’art and handcrafted furniture, and as a result the room looks loved, handmade, personalised and welcoming.
Nina’s makeover also included reusing furniture and appliances where possible to stretch the owner’s budget. “In this kitchen there is good ventilation to keep the room fresh and odour-free, anti-microbial surfaces for good hygiene, and pet-friendly flooring that’s simple and easy to clean and maintain,” she says.

3. Design Spaces That Are Supportive
Our bathrooms and bedrooms are often referred to as sanctuaries, where we can retreat for comfort, so boosting these restorative spaces with even more supportive additions will encourage a happier, healthier and better-quality life.
For example, by ensuring the bed has a headboard, the head of the bed is not against a wall with a toilet behind it (even if the toilet is not positioned on this wall and is located many rooms away), and the footboard is not lined up with an exterior exit door (even if it is located several stories below), which means you will increase support in your life, be healthier, and live a longer life.
Indoor plants are hugely important for oxygenation, air filtration, and temperature and humidity regulation (but do not place in kitchens or bedrooms), and can transform a de-natured environment, such as a room with no windows. Nina introduced a healthy, verdant green plant into this spa bathroom – a full renovation project in Ireland – which brought nature from the outside indoors, introduced a healing energy into the room, and improved the overall sense of well-being.
