Who: Marc Masters of Cutting Edge Innovative
Where: Miami
In his own words: “I’ve always enjoyed transformational projects and how we’re able to rebuild a structure to the client’s delight.”
Since the pandemic, many of us have had to reconsider the spaces we occupy. According to Cutting Edge Innovative co-founder Marc Masters, this redefinition of space — and a focus on how it makes us feel — is top of mind for homeowners. Indoor air quality has taken center stage. Tranquil colors are trending. Acoustic separation sometimes trumps an open floor plan. Under-the-stair storage is now the perfect office nook. Now that our at-home patterns have changed, it may be time for our home designs to change as well.

A team effort. Masters, who’s originally from New York, had long had a keen interest in design and real estate. After moving to Florida and meeting his future Cutting Edge Innovative co-founder, he joined the remodeling business to help bring transformational designs to life. The group at Cutting Edge Innovative comes together as a team to think creatively and problem-solve. “We have a lot of people who have been here for many years,” Masters says. “It’s rewarding to watch our employees grow with us.”
Communication is key. Construction projects can be challenging, especially in light of COVID-19. The Cutting Edge Innovative team relishes that challenge. “That’s where we excel,” Masters says. “No matter what the problem is, we try to overcome it.” The problem-solving starts with communication. “For a project to come out well, you need to have a lot of communication with all the parties involved,” Masters says. “We bring everyone together to share information.”
Ready to rethink where you live, work and play? Masters shares his ideas below.

1. Get Creative With the Space You Have
If home is where you work as well as play these days, it may be time to redefine the house you have. Many homeowners are rethinking how they use their space as they remodel. Garages are converting to gyms. Spare rooms are becoming essential home offices. While an open floor plan still appeals, privacy is now just as important. “We’re noticing that clients still want an open kitchen and dining room while having more definitive spaces for other activities,” Masters says.
In this Miami home, the living room and dining areas follow an open floor plan to create one large entertaining space. However, the kitchen is separated by a staircase, providing more space between those cooking and those who might be working at the dining table. A lounge area with a TV is separated from the living room by a glass door, which maintains the open, airy look.

2. Bring Your Outdoors in (and Vice Versa)
Accessible outdoor space is highly prized right now. If you’re spending more time at home, why not make your home as resort-like as possible? “Especially here in Florida, homeowners want to bring the outside inside,” Masters says. Sliding or accordion glass doors help merge your interior living room with your outdoor pool or entertaining area. Investing in outdoor kitchens, decks, pergolas, pools or water features can add a resort-like feel to the everyday.
At this Miami residence, a large patio connects two wings of the contemporary home. Lounge chairs, side tables and a speaker system bring the comforts of home outside. Two sets of glass doors open onto the greenery of the patio to bring a glimpse of the outdoors in.

3. Add to What You Have
Spending significantly more time at home has made many homeowners realize that they simply need more space. If you’re not in a position to buy a home with a bigger floor plan or you simply love where you live, an addition might be the answer. “Especially for parents when the kids are home more often, the reality is that you just need more rooms,” Masters says. “It can be easier to expand than to move.”
One way to expand on what you have is to upgrade your outdoor area, as these Miami homeowners did. Although it doesn’t expand the footprint of the home, the L-shaped pool and jacuzzi ensure that the backyard will be a popular place to spend time for both homeowners and guests.
