1. At the window. We’ll mostly be looking at dried herb and spice storage, but this design for growing herbs is so ingenious it’s a great way to kick things off. Just in front of the window is a copper herb bin that drains directly into the sink drain. The plants receive much-needed natural light, can be watered with the sprayer and there’s no mess.

In the opposite corner of the living room, a custom flip-down desk with storage is used as a home office. The original wall was covered in the same mahogany panels that sheathed the walls in the common areas.

4. Start shopping from the bulk bins. Purchasing food from the bulk bins means you buy just as much as you need (and avoid wasting food) and cut way down on the amount of bulky packaging you bring home. This is especially helpful when trying new ingredients for the first time — you can make a recipe once and not worry about getting stuck with an entire container of a (pricey) grain or spice you don’t love.Find kitchen storage containers
