2016 Sunset Magazine Idea Modern House: Berkeley/Oakland Hills

5 level home with 6 cantilevered decks with great views of the San Francisco Bay. The house was the 2016 Sunset Magazine Idea House. The house meets the Wildland Urban Interface requirements for fire resistance and is fully-fire sprinkled.

House appearance described as California modern, California Coastal, or California Contemporary, San Francisco modern, Bay Area or South Bay residential design, with Sustainability and green design.

Exterior siding is the Hardie Artisan siding; Windows by Western Window Systems, glass guardrails by Feeney.

The view terrace is the signature space of the house. First seen from the entry, the terrace steps down to wind-protected fire-bowl, surrounded by tall glass walls. Plantings in bowl make for a terrific area to relax.

View of the top terrace; the steps lead down to the firebowl pit area. The tall glass railings provide window protection while enjoying the incredible views of San Francisco Bay. Terrace is 60 feet above the sloping grade.

The stairs lead down from the entry to the main floor with the dining room. The openness is provided by the 10'-0" high ceilings, glass railings, and full height windows. the dark furnishings, the dark metal light fixtures work well with the dark window frames.
