Visit a Texas Backyard Designed for Lounging and Playing
In this episode of Houzz TV Live, landscape and pool designer Randy Angell gives a virtual tour of his client’s backyard in Plano, Texas. Angell updated the once-empty rectangle space to include zones for lounging, swimming and playing. A raised deck features an ipe wood shade structure and fire feature. A shallow swimming pool was designed with volleyball in mind. A large spa can be used as a small pool for kids. And a putting green offers an opportunity to improve one’s short game. Angell also discusses how synthetic grass can help soften hardscaping and shares tips for elements to consider when working with a pro on Houzz to design an in-ground pool.

Awesome design...every detail considered and addressed.
What a talent! What a beautiful design and use of synthetics and the concept of a shallow pool. Just fantastic! So impressive. It's clear why Randy Angell has won awards for his talent. Great use of listening skills for the client! Wow wow wow!
Good notes for materials and proportions
Hi Randy, I love this layout and how you softened the concrete with the artificial turf. I'm inspired by your creation and was wondering if your could tell me what the dimensions of this Texas back yard is as well as the pool dimensions please. I have a very similar rectangular grass yard now that I'm looking to transform into an oasis similar to your concept. Just wondering if it's feasible given the my size constraints. Thank you very much for your feedback... Dave.
amazing
Great design work
Wow, this is beautiful
Stunning backyard . Great job !
Wowwwwww
Looks Awesome !
This is amazing work and ain’t it wonderful when a plan comes together. Nothing like a man that knows his job
Beautiful design. Can you share what brand of synthetic turf used to soften the pool area?

Amazing transformation of a backyard. Never thought this possible with a pool a spa spot and a lounge. Great job! Love it. Thanks for sharing
Amazing transformation of the space!
This is stunning! Just goes to show with creativity and design you can transform any yard.
oh my God, this is gorgeous. knowing what could be the starting budget to get a space as such would be so amazing
Beautiful work, love everything about it!
Is it possible to share white trees and greenery were used along the back? We have a pool in CA and I'm struggling to find trees that don't shed but still look lush like these. Beautiful work!!
Great work and great sense of the space and color utilization
Wonderful design, would love to know where the outdoor seating is from.
Two details that I love about this design are the dark planters with the bright yellow green plants. It’s such a nice contrast. The next detail I liked was the wood bench next to the fire feature. Perfect for wet swimmers to come close and get warmed up. The addition of the white fire feature with the blue stones is awesome! It’s like water and fire together! Ok, that was three things, I realize, and I could go on... Nicely done!
How can my daughter and son-in-law see this?
They’re in San Antonio?
Beautiful
WOW! What a fantastic transformation!! REALLY cool!!!
This overall design is impressive. The only thing I can't wrap my head around is a shallow pool. Why bother if there is no deep end? I recently purchased a house in Texas and saw so many that made us run because of the shallow pool.
Awesome work. You transformed the backyard to beauty. Please do let us know the size of the pool, the yard and the deck area.
It is really amazing. What is the size of this field?
Reminds me of a study office once had.
What was the total budget?
Yes, all fantanstic, very good work.!!!!!!
Was some time ago. Little pavilion was maybe $40,000. No plumbing and electrical except a few outlets.
This is one of our all-time favorite projects! We love being a small part of this gorgeous backyard. The design is not only beautiful but thoughtful and well planned for years of enjoyment. Randy did an amazing job on this design!
Really nice but I would have liked a few words about installing the putting green...
Spectacular!
What are the dimensions on the pool?
I swear this is Brent Rivera’s house
Everyone likes a space that they can
use to be themselves. Barring the bedroom where you can be your own, you always
need a space for entertaining guests. But not always can you go ahead and
decorate the space every time you have a party or get-together there. The
backyard mentioned in this post gives me not only a sense of comfort while
looking at it, but also makes me imagine the kind of people the owners might
be. This is the kind of look and feel you must go for if you are looking for
such a space in your home. Kudos to the writer for coming up with this
particular backyard and writing a whole blog on the beautiful aspects of the
same.
Great work and wonderful design everything is perfect my wishes
Fantastic!!! Right now I'm in the process of planning my backyard with a pool and have been thinking and re-thinking what to include in it (or not), so this interview and images gave me great ideas and guidance! Thank you! Living in the north or Argentina, where temperatures range the 95-110 d.F 9 months in the year, the outdoors are the most used part of the house. I will definitely try to "mimic" this design. Thanks again, GREAT job!!
I love it
