Designer Tips for Working With Colour and Pattern

In this episode of Houzz TV Live, Kiya Kelly of the Houzz communications team talks with interior designer Bhavin Taylor about how colour and pattern can bring a little cheer to your home. Bhavin highlights several spaces he designed that show how he plays around with tones found in wallpaper, paint, artwork, furniture and accessories to create a cohesive scheme.

In one living space, he balanced a bold black, white and yellow wallpaper in a geometric pattern with softer tones in the rug and furniture. In his own bathroom, Bhavin arranged pink tiles in a fun pattern to bring a punch of style to a small space. And in a bedroom, he used restful blues and greys to introduce colour, pattern and texture while maintaining a calm atmosphere.

I rented an apartment one time that had a very small half bath painted a beautiful vibrant coral color. I kept thinking of how folks say keeping it lighter makes it look bigger. But I thought it looked fabulous, and maybe even bigger buy having a bold color. Certainly more interesting. I think bathrooms and bedrooms can really handle going wild with color because you don't spend that much time in there -not awake anyway.

The other rooms I mostly like white because soon as any color is applied it gets darker. I'd rather put pops of color within a white space. And natural wood floors - they add so much warmth. There's a wonderful depth to unstained, natural wood - sort of like looking into a tigers eye stone - you don't just see the surface. Once a stain is applied that depth is gone, and so is the warmth...

I’ve got a geometric printed wallpaper and was wondering if square photo frames would look good on it or should I go with mirrors with sun ray effects

Really interesting. Love the idea of don’t ask people’s opinion and just surround yourself with things you love. That’s the Houzz advice forum out of the window lol!

Great to see something different to the current preoccupation with grey and white. Love the textured wallpaper.

I LOVE color and everyone who sees my Reno agrees. I have an electric French cottage coastal glam vibe and use teal, amethyst and whites everywhere and it is gorgeous. Textures in all white are BLOODLESS to me and color celebrates life. I learned to use one big print/design with a smaller print /pattern and then a plain color.
