The counters are Formica Laminate, Labrador Granite, with a honed finish and 1/4" beveled edge.

Re: black granite------ I'm not a pro or anything, but we put a home depot grade black granite as our vanity top in a bathroom and the spots and finger prints do drive me crazy, and I'm the last person to call a neat freak. It never seems clean. I was recently at floor and decor looking at granite (dreaming of finishing a basement) and saw a honed black granite that looked really nice if your heart is set on black. I've seen that (honed black) in a kitchen in a luxury home and it looks extremely nice. It's a bit more expensive, but worth considering if choosing between black granites. Personally, I'm more of a marble fan and have marble in the kitchen. It's more high maintenance (meaning, you just have to use common sense and not treat it like you did in college). I've also owned a home with silestone and that is one durable and tough stone.

I do not see velvets and silks for a kitchen sink window sorry. There are plenty of gorgeous fabrics around with beautiful damask or geometric pattern that are striking, that could be found in a faux silk or linen. Velvet is something that I would never put in a kitchen. But it is your kitchen.

ms1zebra, Thanks for your comment and interest! River-rock finished aluminum is a great surface. Its unfinished textured top allows for increased durability for work surfaces. It is resilient with heat, stains, oxidation, but will show signs of use if heavy objects are dropped on or slid across it or cutting is done on it with steel knives. As mainly a lighting manufacturer, we do not heavily promote our tile choices, so we haven't made much of an impact on the tile market. Perhaps when folks think of aluminum as a material, they think about unfinished flat aluminum sheet, which is not a good or even available choice for kitchen surfaces. Kitchen cabinets will look fantastic painted. The thing to consider when thinking about worktops is the work black granite creates - they show every little watermark, so need a lot of polishing. I discovered this when doing lots of experiments on granite samples! Other thing to bear in mind is granite is porous, so you have to be careful about staining the lighter coloured worktops and granite requires resealing after a few years. Because I'm quite lazy and didn't want any maintenance, plus we are a messy family, I went with Compac Quartz in white mirror, it's practically bomb proof and I haven't managed to stain it yet (3 years on). Comes in tons of colours.
