Front entry..Need help.

What color should I paint my door to make this not so blah and maybe some ideas to take care of the ugly water faucet/sprinkler area.

I think rosiegabby's idea of the bench is genius. I would create a bench that had a hinged top and make it backless to butt up against the house. You could pop open the lid for faucet usage and store the hose inside;) Put a colorful cushion on top to cooridinate with your *favorite* colored front door;))

You could put some planters at different levels in front of the faucet and pipes (colored flowers) or a black iron plant stand (like a bakers rack). If you're not afraid of paint you could do a Red door or even Black. Have fun!

If the pipes are low enough you could put a bench/love seat over it.

The hose could go in a hose pot.

Door, maybe red.

Jalna99--Do you mean that there is no patio outside the front door? Or do you mean that you would like to pull the exterior door forward, under the existing porch roof enough to facilitate movement between rooms more easily? Both actions will require drawings and permits, I have little doubt, The second opton is much more substantial, because you would be creating new habitable space to what is now the exterior side of the structure. I suggest looking through the Houzz resources, and choosing a good bloke with the proper training in design that can steer you through the design and permit process to the extent that it will serve your immediate needs. I agree re Skimmia, also look at Daphne odora and Sarcococca (both have fantastic scent), Viburnum davidii, Hellebores for early flowers and Astrantia and Geraniums for summer colour. Improve the soil before planting by adding loads of rich compost or rotted horse manure.

It's a lot of work, but i would consider seriously putting a water pipe beneath the ground to run the sprinklers as that is definitely not good place for water hose (unsightly)

If possible, i would build a short addition and bring your front door outward more. As far as its color goes i think it looks good, it's just recessed in too much. BTW, i like your slate walkway

WATER VALVES

For the water valves you can hide them under a faux boulder. Some faux boulders are shaped with a flat top for a seat. Place a couple of them in this spot and some small potted greens or flowers and even some smaller real rocks.

My 3 foot faux boulder (50 pounds) covers up the large unsightly plate for the underground phone lines in my front yard at the street. Faux boulders are sold at local masonry building supply yards in your area NOT Home Depot or Lowes who carry resin boulders. Something your size should be around $100. They are priced by size.

Last time the phone company crew came out they were ranting to me that because I put a huge boulder on their equipment they will need a backhoe in order to work. I went out and with one hand lifted the boulder. Lots of shocked looks from them. SMILE.

WATER HOSE BIB

Hose bibs can be easily moved by a plumber without disturbing your stone. They use a water drill to install the pipe under you stone work. OR you can have another hose bib located elsewhere by taping into another water line.

Do NOT connect a house bib line to a house line if you have a water softner, because you will be using salted water not water from the main water lines. Salted water is not good for watering outside.

WREATH

As Rosiegabby said move the wreath down. Or you can move it to the window to the right of the door.

Regarding Margo's comment - love it, build a bench, cover with cushion and then you might consider a decorative rectangular metal wall piece to act as a faux back for your bench.

All of you came up with great ideas...especially the bench idea. I also love tiffany66's idea too of the fake bolder over the pipes. The garden with the bolder is terrific. Who would guess that the bolder has pipes under it :)

rosiegabby great idea with the bench....thanks Margo : ) The bolder idea is also so clever. I did see these in some home decor sales magazine. The blue posted by Kristina is lovely and is close to the trim at the corner of the front door.

I have a question, why is some of the trim blue and some white? I'd make it all the same.
Margo's bench sounds like the best option for your pipes and hose.

That blue color looks like periwinkle which I love. Periwinkle looks beautiful with a yellow orange color maybe in a wreathe or cushion.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I just bought the home and haven't made it to the front yet to paint or update except to hang the wreath. I did hang the wreath lower and will now look into the the options you have suggested.

Maybe you could use a lattice folding screen on wheels for covering that area. Attach it to the right side on the house. Place a couple of potted plants in front of the screen. If there is no room for pots, I would scratch this idea : )

re. the bench idea: if you anchor a hand turned hose reel inside, and cut openings for the crank and hose, you won't need to take the cushions off for access.
