What are the secrets to Gothic gingerbreading?

We're building a Carpenter Gothic in East TN. My father-in-law bought me a scroll saw for Christmas so I can design and make my own gingerbreading. The framers are working on the second story walls so it won't be long now until I have to get started. Do you have any pointers? I would appreciate anything you could share!

    I have researched historical photos. This home was modeled after an actual historic home.
