Herringbone flooring against curved stair finish?

Hi all, our builders are finishing the flooring in our house, a laminate herringbone. We got all the skirting removed apart from on one side, so the flooring could have a nice, hidden finish with skirting on top. We didn't want scotia or beading as the finished look, so asked our builders to do a silicone finish around the stair interface, old skirting length and fireplace hearth. We've just been to the house and seen that they went and installed scotia in these areas, and also didn't manage to get the curve around the stair - said it's too difficult because of the click fit of the laminate and that he can't do the curve. I can't have this as it is, does anyone have any ideas how to do the rounded edge and hide to the stair? And also how to finish against the other areas as well, while leaving enough room for expansion? Attached photo showing what they've done by the stair, and what the room with the fireplace looks like if it helps.

I would try to glue / screw several pieces of thin (6mm) plywood onto the lowest stair riser. When you steam thinner plywood, it becomes somewhat bendable. So doing that, you could "build up" the rounded lowest riser to come forward over the flooring - think "in-built skirting". Then re-fit the carpet on top.

This would / could work for a gap of ~20mm or so. You couldn't build it up more because then you'd come forward of the stair tread. As your picture looks like, you'd try to make the riser "flush" with the newel post that way.

The correct way to install the flooring would have been to undercut the stair like should be done with door jams. You may be able to get a flexible trim to go around the curve. I used a flat trim around my hearth.

Simplify is always a good strategy with play rooms. The temptation to cover the walls with artwork and posters can add to the visual clutter. I would suggest a larger area rug to ground the space and create a soft place for playing on the floor. A medium colour with a fleck from other hues in the curtains and upholstery will help hide dirt and lint. I think you could definitely cozy it up with a warm wall colour to unify the space. Lastly, closed storage for the toys goes a long way to creating order from the chaos. You will have a lovely space the children enjoy and you find restful.

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

Hi all, We are at construction stage of our new build and now need to decide/bottom out on the stair design. I've attached the plans and also a recent photo of the project. The interior curved wall will be constructed with the same stone as the outside and will cover from ground floor to 1st floor ceiling level. Our intention is to have an open thread design in order to allow the stone be seen - the thought is that we will have a single steel support with timber steps. The handrail and side of stairs is very much open for discussion/suggestions. I've seen loads of different options on the website however I'm still struggling to decide. Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

I think they should finish this with a neat edge using an edging plank. This is fancier with a metal trim but you can get the idea.

As Sarah said the bottom step needed to be removed, the floor laid then the step refitted.

Flooring family here , son is a fitter, husband works for a supplier and I worked in a carpet shop . The reason they have to use a scotia is they have to leave what is called an expansion gap . This allows for the wood laminate to expand and contract depending on the seasons as anything with wood will expand and contract. They should have explained this to you before fitting . If you had LVT like the picture with a border some has put on this doesn’t need a gap hence being able to butt right up to the bottom step . The only thing you can do as you will need an expansion gap is to build up the riser below the bottom stair to cover the gap and then fit underlay and carpet over the top. Just seen this post is a few days old now , hope you got it sorted out
