Help with fireplace void

last month

We moved into our house a year ago, and have recently removed a gas fire from the fireplace in the main living room. I like the fireplace itself and intend to keep it, but I’m unsure what to do with the “void”. I don’t think we’ll put another fire that needs ventilating in the space so I’m wondering about painting it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! The house was built in 1955, although the architecture is in the style of a 1930s semi to match the rest of the street.

Hi, I would paint it very dark charcoal grey or black, or vintage bronze to make it more interesting and put three chunky candles of different heights.

I think you should paint the walls grey. Grey and red are fabulous together. If you need to because the room is small, put a darker grey on the wall where the fireplace is and a softer one everywhere else. Use the cream color of the fireplace in your throw pillows, rug, art etc as a accent color. Seems the room is small so the TV above the fireplace might be a good choice. The right chandelier and sconces will improve lighting. Add some table lamps. Chrome will make the lighting pop. What is the floorplan going to be with the new furniture?

Actually I managed to find a stockist of chalk paint which is fantastic as it needs no sanding, no primer just straight on to the marble, and made a start on it tonight, I didn't think to take a picture before hand, but I will post a pic after :-)

I would buy a cast iron fire basket and add logs in order to give the illusion of a fire

A mere cosmetic update would be to paint the inside black and add a custom fitted picture frame around the cut edges.
