Ideas for external refresh
Hi houzzers, the time has come to tackle the outside of the house. I don’t like the current magnolia colour and standard pure brilliant white doesn’t appeal. Could you recommend some colour schemes, maybe whether to pick out window sills, woodwork etc and also which products you might recommend. I’ve never had a painted house before and I’m a little stuck for ideas.
(Windows need to stay as they are, can’t afford replacements for a few years)

We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! Comments (7)Daylight on a rainy day in Ireland, ah. The easy thing to do is change the bulbs in the recessed fixtures to the maximum allowed. But this will not help with overall illumination because the recessed fixtures point straight down, not sideways. For that you need to add a surface mount or close to ceiling fixture, meaning new electrical work. Some recessed fixtures can be converted to pendants, by the way. Since it is so dark, I suggest painting the whole thing a nice bright white, including the laminate cabinets. There are many discussion posts on painting laminate cabinets on Houzz. I would paint the interior of the missing-doors cabinet with an oil based white paint, too, to brighten it up. Choose a white that coordinates well with the countertop, flooring and tile. The tile can be changed, of course, sooner or later. With some fiddling, you may be able to adjust the sagging cabinet doors under the sink. These are often much used. If the hinges have seen better days, replace them with identical ones, or swap them with less-used hinges, say from those upper cabinets you took down. It's an old house trick to swap worn parts with less-used parts from elsewhere. Comments (8)I painted my kitchen three years ago, and I love it. It's hard work and can take some weeks to do. You need to take doors off, remove the hinges and handles. Remember you need to prime and paint two coats on each side, so for a door that equates to six coats of paint and letting each coat dry. I used Mylands of London paint, I'm just hooked on this paint as the eggshell is dead flat with only 8 percent sheen, you wont get another paint any flatter. And if the paints good enough for Downtown Abbey, then it's good enough for us. I would hold back on painting wall tiles, as they are white and look fine , paint the cupboards first and see what it looks like. Comments (0)Hello Would anyone have experience with a similar property to ours and share their solution/knowledge? Issue We have a small Victorian cottage gable-onto-driveway with L-shaped garden. The hall door, porch is three-quarters of the way down the property. Our modest accommodation 3 bedrooms (at gable) (the double b/room currently doubles up as a playroom), sitting room, (internal/no windows) bathroom and then scullery kitchen and off that a side return ('internal' courtyard which we have nice storage outbuilding and in is also where we also grow vegetables, fruit etc. Our idea We would like to bring the porch to the 'front' of the cottage. We want build a hall cottage entrance replicated but flush with corridor-hall. The bedrooms would then have new entrance doors through old gable wall into new hall. The hall door will be centre of the new hall, build a bathroom to one side (external window, proper ventilation). This new hallway would wrap around to the left of the property into a 30sqm room with french doors facing front and french doors at other end of that room (onto leftover section of garden) and this room would have a small en suite. This room would connect by french doors (subsume the current windows into the sitting room). The internal bathroom can be (happily!) demolished and space used to double the size of kitchen and connect by barn door/sliding solid door to playroom/dining room. We think this build would provide adequate living space for our small family and a flow to the house with spaces that can join up and close off, such flow which it currently lacks. 2 months agoI like the contrast on these images. I would choose a confident colour for the render and then paint the windows, window reveals, window cills, wood beams, sofits etc all white or nearly white

2 months agoI would choose a pastel shade, whether it’s beige, pale green or blue, but then I’m not keen on dark colours! Here’s some ideas

2 months agoJust for balance here is a picture of a red brick house. I think this is as dark as the options I’m suggestion and so I reject that this tone is difficult to live with- many people do.

29 days agoNot quite finished yet but thought I’d show how things ended up. I didn’t have the bravery to go dark and after testing many shades I ended up with Gravel by Sandtex.
