Is this fireplace original?
Hi there,
We’ve just moved into a Victorian terrace house, we believe it was built roughly 1890s. It’s a project. Anyway, I was wondering if this fireplace would have been the original one and if so how best to go about restoring the tiles (we’re not bothered about making it fire-worthy).
It’s got a gas line into it so it’s either been converted somewhere down the line or completely replaced.
I’m not particularly keen of these tiles or even the wood surround so I’m quite hoping people will say it’s not original!
The fire place is in the front room but I’ll include a pic of the fireplace in the middle room for comparison. (Also interested in that one too)

The purple tones of the grass mat wall paper nice, more modern, the gray tones, a little more traditional. Comments (8)Well we live in a flat on the 4th floor in Edinburgh city. So we loved the thought of being able to expose the original stone walls of the flat. You can see from the pictures that we had it done for the kitchen and lounge. Since everything of ours are modern, the stone wall really brings an edge to the design. And in the lounge, we painted it the Farrow & Ball Downpipe which we think really sets it off next to the stone. Especially with the mouldings on the window, the lounge has become quite a grand looking space even without any furnishings. Comments (0)Hi there I’m building a new house and need to buy furniture as we are about 12-16 weeks out now. I have struggled with furniture layout as had originally been thinking of a corner couch in the middle or the roof so fire and tv would be visible when you sat down, but I drew it on floor in chalk and all it did was create a walkway around the couch with no real space for anything else - eg additional chair at the back end of the room etc. Felt to me like a waste of space and no function. I seem to have a lot of window and not so much wall to work with and as the ceiling is vaulted at the end where I have the fireplace seems to me would be odd not to orientate the furniture towards that view! I’ve drawn an alternative option in a programme I found online which I set out below with some pictures. The ceiling is vaulted to about 4.5 metres or so at the wall where the plant is in the picture below. Inset fire on that wall and tv on wall opposite over a sideboard. 3 months agoI love a fireplace, but it is hard to guess if yours are original or not. I would guess they are, although the tiling doesn’t look right to me, that is many Victorian fireplace tiles have floral themes. There are so many reproductions about that it is so hard to say. I would suggest you look at websites selling original fireplaces to see how they compare to yours maybe? If you hate them then your home doesn’t need to be a museum so why not just sell them, there is quite a market for Victorian fireplaces. I have a 1930s house with horrible tiled fireplaces which we removed, then I installed a traditional style, but brand new, fireplace to create some character. Picture below. Personally I like all your fireplaces. , particularly the first and last ones (white) they add so much character to a room both modern and traditional, but it’s your home and your decision.
