Skirting and Architrave

My skirting and architrave were bought and installed by my builder. He bought the skirting 15mm thick. And the architrave 10mm.

It looks pants cos the skirting is not in line with the architrave. Can anyone share a way of resolving this myself please

The only way to make it correct is to swap the architrave to match the 15mm of the skirting.

It will have to be redone with the same thickness. Decide which of the two thicknesses you prefer and also which is more work to replace. The walls might need replastering at the bottom if the skirting is not removed carefully. You cannot resolve this yourself and I hope you kept some of his payment back prior to this mistake. If you have fallen out with your builder this isn't going to be easy to fix. It also depends on whether the skirting is pin nailed or glued. I think the 15mm architrave would look better.

It depends on the period of your house. If the house is comparatively modern and the mouldings are simple shapes, then I completely agree with the advice above.

However, if you have a period house, and you can’t reach a resolution with the builder, it may be possible to extend the architrave and thus make it at least the thickness of the skirting. To do this you will need to remove a short piece of the skirting on either side of the architrave to accommodate the extra moulding. It’s a fiddly job with the skirting in situ, but possible with a multitool. It’s worth checking out the huge variety of profiles of Georgian and Regency architraves, to see if any might suit the character of your house, and if they could be created by adding an ‘extension’ to your existing architraves.

But it really would be much easier to get the builder back to do the job properly!

I think this is a design opportunity missed rather than a mistake. Unless you specified your requirement to the builder I think any changes are down to you. Plenty of houses where skirts and archs are not identical.

Im not a builder by no stretch of the imagination. But a lot of the people i know are. And they all say that it is standard for skirting and architrave to match in size and style. Unless requested otherwise.

I you might be better to persue Jen's suggestion. What she is describing are plinth blocks. There are modern options if you google it.
