Your house your choice. I would keep the stairs consistent but that's because I prefer to consider the whole house when chosing colours. If you want a different moody scheme downstairs then that's your choice. If you are not planning on selling or moving soon do what you like. I think having the balustrades the same is more about coherence than playing it safe. Could you paint a bit and see how it looks first? I would scour Houzz for stair examples.

I’d keep them fairly consistent. Your main staircase is grander so would add the panelling there but continue the paint colour onto the other stairs. If both stairs were originally there I’d guess that’s what they’d have done ie ”fancy” staircase on display to visitors from the front door?!

However similar to Isla, paint the main stairs and see what you think

I think you should have the same colour banister all the way up the house. But you could stop the dado rail at the first floor landing

I like it as it is. Your staircase has fine period detailing so wouldn't muddy it with on trend paint colours.

Hi all. Thanks for your advice. I've decided to keep both staircases decorated the same. My latest dilemma is what to do for flooring for the first floor landing. I need to replace the flooring under the carpet as it's structurally unsound. I'm trying to decide between wood floor like our ground floor or go with new carpet. Carpet would be cosier I think and what we're used to, but flooring might make for a nice change. Any opinions?
