Too many spot lights - can they be removed.

Hi All, I have added too many spotlights in my extension area, and the room looks crazy bright. We have changed the Watt setting to the lowest, changed the colours to neutral white, and used a dimmer switch. Is there a way to remove a row of bulbs and fix the ceiling? We have completed the extension, and the builder says it is impossible to fix now. I have nearly two bulbs for every square meter. I was adamant about adding so much light as we had dark corners earlier, and it was hard when working from home with desks pushed the corners.

It's not impossible to fix it's just expensive and time consuming. You will need an electrician to remove the spots you do not want and make it safe as I am sure you do not want blanks covering the previous spotlights positions. Once it is safe you will need to have the holes covered with a circle of plasterboard attached to a batten placed across the hole on the inside. Then filler or plaster depending on what's required and repaint. I hope this helps. If in doubt call a professional to assess the situation. I once replaced large spotlights with smaller ones but in the same position so I know how tricky it is. If it really bothers you the next step is a new ceiling board and start from scratch with your sparky about where to place the spotlights. I'm not sure what is the recommended distance between them but ours are about every 2m in each direction and it works well.

Hi, I have the same problem in my hallway. If your budget is tight, just replacing the ceiling light with something like a starburst pendant with at least 6 bulbs would instantly improve the space. Also I would hang some bold and bright artwork on the walls and put a runner on the floor. Mirrors are also great for your space. I'm attaching a photo example. See how the eye is instantly drawn to the bold door? Also if you can repaint the wall, I would recommend you to use glossy finish paint so the light can bounce off the walls too. Agree with alant1000 about starting from scratch, but not sure about white. They are some lovely either light grey, light green, or light caramel, which will keep the room warm feeling, and less stark. The wallpaper feature wall you presently have is far too dark for the room - if you want wallpaper, there are some lovely sparkle designs, or stick to paint and do a slightly darker colour than the chosen wall colour. Have you thought about painting the doors white? The dark curtains do not help either. Do you need curtains and vertical blinds? If you lost the curtains, the window would look neater and lighter. There are a thousand ways to use mirrors beautifully in a living room -- just not any old mirror in any old place, that I would agree with I think you should have art over the fireplace, and I see potential for using a scattering of small mirrors to bring light into the alcove and counterbalance the somewhat awkward angle of the TV. I'm assuming there's nowhere else to put the TV? I agree that the furniture in that corner is rather too flimsy to handle either the size of the TV or the bold black boxes of the fireplace and hearth. How about a striking floor vase? Alcove shelving

I am looking for some ideas for shelving the alcoves beside our fireplace. I love the black, classic ornate detail on the fire surround and the coving so I would like to compliment that style. I will be removing the dado rail and painting the room also. I need shelving/cupboard for the television on one side as you can see. I would like a spot for a lamp and accessories on the other side. Has anybody any tips for me? Any colour suggestions? Should I keep the walls light to let the fireplace stand out?

Maybe you could put in 1 or 2 ceiling speakers in their place - just because you already have the holes in the ceiling.
