What paint colour for our new lounge please?

We would like to paint our new lounge which is large, south facing and has high ceilings. We are planning to get alcoves either side of the fireplace and window shutters, and we will paint above the cornicing white. I have been thinking about a dark blue or mid green as I think the room might be able to pull it off but am not sure if we are better going more neutral. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Consider going with tone on tone textured tiles. Keep it classical. Sometimes you can introduce a slightly darker contrasting grout color to accentuate the tile shape or design. The new trend is moving away from the subway tile look, it might date the kitchen in a short period of time. I would select your back splash tile before selecting the paint color. Paint colors I always select last, it is what pulls everything together.

Please, please, please, don't paint any of the wood. You have a beautiful setting for mid century modern décor. I can agree with removing the carpet from the stairs, however I would just want to add a jute floor covering for the stairs after. The light fixtures should probably both be changed. You even have a lovely roomy space in your foyer. I always recommend starting with the foundation of the room, which is the floor covering. Kilim, ikat, Persian or Oriental would be my choice. I would think minimalist would be very fitting in this space.

Hi Divechick, No i love the layout, the kitchen is a good layout for using the dishwasher, fridge and cooker all close by., We have our plates and bowls in drawers which i love too.One thing we do need is more storage though. We are looking at knocking through to next room next year so the whole room will be wider and incorporate a utility. I think i will keep the general kitchen layout the same though but add more presses!

Thank you very much. Yes I think I agree. Do you happen to know what the paint colours are of pictures two and three? I'm a bit undecided about blue or green. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. :-)

Thanks Sarah. Yes I meant the picture rail. I thought it would make it look smarter doing that perhaps and also not make the room too dark if we went for a dark colour but thats good advice to think about doing the same colour all the way to the ceiling.

Hi,

Wow what a lovely room with such high ceilings. You are lucky to have a south facing room and you have lots of options open to you! I think it would be good to try and identify an overall colour palette for the room before settling on a paint colour. You have your sofa colour already so we would explore some colour palettes that include this colour as a starting point. You can then use this colour palette as a reference for the other pieces in the room such as artwork, rug, decorative accessories etc. This will ensure the room has a put together, cohesive look.

Thanks Becky. Thats kind. I will give it some thought. We plan to buy new sofa's but thought we'd stay quite neutral with those and then add colour to the walls, prints, cushions etc. I am just concerned it needs to be something that suits in both summer and winter. I will have a look at the work you do.

I would just be wary of going a really dark colour with the floor. Excuse the awful paint job but just to illustrate! That could of course be broken up with a rug

I would choose your sofas first as colours are much more limited than paint

If you get a couple of cheaper cushions you can always swap them in winter/summer or add a faux fur/wool throw etc. I used to swap my curtains but current windows are now similar in size to yours so no longer affordable!

With those lovely blush sofas I would look at Oval Room Blue or perhaps a gentle green like Cromarty, both by Farrow & Ball. Pigeon is a good choice too in a period room, especially a sunny one. They tend to suit period properties very well, especially with a fresh white ceiling. Below is Oval Room first, then Cromarty (my room) and Pigeon last. There are so many lovely shades you can choose but I would look at the furniture and flooring and go from there.
