How do I put a roof on this space to make a storage area please.

I would like to use the void between my house and garage as a storage area, examples of which are shown in the photos. The top half of my house is tiled and the side of the garage is pitched so I am struggling to work out how best to put diy roof on it. I will be doing it myself so the simplest solutions would be super. I’m guessing the gutter will need to be fitted internally, like in one of the photos?

The porch is the window in between the garage and the house. Why the builder didn't make the house or garage bigger is anyone’s guess. Any advice would very much be appreciated. Thank you.

First off, you will need to check if you have to have planning consent to fill that void. It's probably there in the first place because planners rejected the idea of an attached garage by previous owners. Check any consents you already have for the garage as well. Even though you may only use it as a shed, because it's attached to the house planning would likely consider it an extension, especially if it uses a fixed roof structure. This is why people put up garden offices/sheds. Easier to do and less interaction with planning.

Yes check planning consent first, as that could be why the builder built as he did.

Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

I understand what you want to do, so here's my suggestion, if it fits.....I'd move the couch under the mirror. Move table to the center of the kitchen, like an island. Sounds like it's two adults and two toddlers, so I'd definitely remove two of those chairs. Are your kids in high-chairs, if so move the other two chairs out too. Basically you want four chairs not six. Move them to a garage, basement or another room. Put the chairs around two or three sides of the table. I'd leave the side near the stove and washing machine(?) open. TV would mount to the right of the back door. See if that would work. Either way, it's going to be a tight space. Post pics please.

I agree with maikola, turn under the stairs into storage. Maybe combine with a little desk for when the kids are older. I'd swap your dining and living area around. Have the tv on the long left wall with a small sofa a couple of feet in front of the doors and one opposite the tv. It does look as if a 5ft table would fit in the kitchen though? If you don't want to fill too much of the kitchen space consider a bench one side for you to use with chairs for the kids on the other. The area outside the kitchen could then be for the kids to play

If you don't want to make the wall itself straight, maybe consider playing with some deep shelves ABOVE the TV, that could go from the diagonal wall to the straight line where you want to put the TV. Then behind the TV you could have a vertical panel of the same colour/material of the shelves (or matching the colour of the wall) to connect the TV stand to the first shelf and hide the awkward wall. To avoid having empty space right beside the door you could put a narrow shelving unit (with a back panel, not an open one) between the TV stand/panel and the straight wall (or beside it if it's short) that goes from floor to first shelf, again I'm imagining same colour/material of the rest so it binds seamlessly rather than looking like patchwork to fill the space. It's a little complicated to explain but I hope it makes sense!

Thank you for your comments. There are 3 other houses which are the same. The porches were built at the same time. One other neighbour has covered the area between their house and garage but they don't have tiles on the top of their house and their house and garage are on the same level so it was more straightforward!
