what can I do with an uneven fireplace?!

Hi,

In the process of renovating my bedroom and I’m stuck with what to do with my uneven fireplace. Planning to undertake this project myself and felt to post on here for the very first time for some advice.

I would just put a nice fire surround on. Please don’t worry about it being off-centre. This is perfectly normal. Usually there will be a central fireplace in the room below. The bedroom fireplaces above are then off centre because of the chimney from the room below.

Bedroom fireplaces are often off centre so I don’t think that’s an issue. Separately reinstating it or adding a fire surround will be additional cost so consider if having a fireplace is desirable or by blocking it up you gain more options for furniture placement and save money.

shelly12345...not sure if you have completed your fireplace/room, just saw this post while looking for help with my own family room. I think would paint the fireplace and mirror white...would match the trim work of your room and your lighter furnishings. Something that was suggested to me...use some fabric or poster board to cover the wood on both, just to give you an idea of what it would look like white. That way you are not committed once the paint has been applied to the wood. I love Dytectur's idea of wallpapering the room and having the fireplace wall white. Would really pop! Good luck and post pictures if your finished or when you finish.

I'd definitely put some kind of stone on the walls, all the way to the ceiling. I think the gas fireplace that you have is really cute, but might look at a stone slab on the floor instead of the mat that is there now. I'd take stone inside of that alcove as well, whether matching or contrasting. You can still hang art above, on top of the stone. It would really make the room!

Ooh Darzy I like your thinking. Actually the curtains are taupe and a nearly mint green - not stripes more they blend into each other (see pic). But if I got some art picking out those 2 colours that could work. I love teal but not sure about it on this wall. Maybe coral could be nice or is that too on trend? I also have an old chair I need to get reupholstered and was struggling for ideas for that. But a floral pattern with the green and taupe from the curtains and a third colour that matches the art could work well - ideas, ideas, ideas!Thank you Houzzers I knew you'd help me to look at this differently.

Very difficult to see clearly, a lot of clutter in the way, if you are doing this job yourself then measure the area(s), look up up how to measure your garden advice online, measure your walls, measure what you will retain such as the shed. Get an A3 tracing paper book, sheets of A 3 white paper, eraser, pencils ruler etc. If the A3 white paper needs to be increased, tape 2 sheets together. Draw the plan to scale 1cm to the metre for example. Put in existing paths, steps services, north. Now you have a very basic plan. What kind of garden do you want? How would you divide it up to suit your needs. Do you a patio for table /chairs? Do you want to grow some veg/fruit in raised beds. Or do you want a lawn only with borders and shrubs, place your tracing paper over your plan and draw your desires on that, do as many tracings as you want, until you are satisfied with the results. Use coloured pencils. The walls need uniformity of colour, the shed could do with reprinting...start researching materials, gardening books, magazines, online for ideas that appeal to you and suit your plot. Do you have a budget in mind? If you are not engaging a landscape designer to do a complete plan for you then perhaps a consultation would be a good idea, once you have got the bones of what you want together. In the process of tackling your garden plan you will learn a lot and hopefully gain much satisfaction.

If the fireplace opening is to be retained and re-instated as a working fire, you could potentially install a new mantle above the opening, centred on the chimney breast and overshooting the right side. The section to the right of the opening (still below the mantle) could then become a log store or a hanging place for fireplace tools (or similar!).

Remember to ensure that any material that is combustible is kept at least 30cm away from any point of the burning appliance / stove (or more if recommended by the installer or manufacturer).

Hope this helps you to form some ideas! I have a similar situation in my own home and it is expected in upper rooms in older properties.
