Fitting new windows flush with exterior walls

Hello all...

I am looking at having new UPVC windows installed, followed by external insulation. In order to reduce the reveal depth (insulation and render add a nominal 100mm) I am looking to have the new windows installed flush with the external walls and the sills either added afterwards, or temporarily supported, prior to the insulation and render.

The installers I have spoken are apprehensive about fitting the windows and/or sills in this way - does anyone known why either of these are a issue?

The people quoting for the insulation (builders, plasterers) don't see the problem.

Our house had uPVC windows fitted flush with the external wall and we are gradually replacing them with wooden sash windows, set back in the recess. It’s such an improvement,and the windows don’t get hit by the weather as much as they did when they were flush with the wall. Our house is Edwardian and was designed to have the windows set back, so we’ve put it back to how it should be, which is no doubt why it looks so good. We have a few windows left to do and can’t wait to have them all set back. You do lose internal window board space, but for us it’s a small price to pay for the much improved aesthetic and weather proofing.

If the people doing the insulation think they can fit the windows then ask them to fit them and get the window company to supply only. Personally I think the insulation guys are happy to pass a problem to another trade rather than deal with it at the same time

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

I think the large mirror covering the whole wall will be too big with the tv right there. I am into the antlers but I don't think they relate to anything else in the room other than the fireplace itself. I think your best bet is a simple round mirror. I know you've been shopping locally - if you are open to online, overstock has a big selection. Hi Becky I'm not sure what style you are looking for but try www.solidor.co.uk These are the best low maintenance front doors you can get with lots of options on colours, inside and out. We are one of their installers in Colchester and have four on display, if we are near enough pop in, if not just find a local installer. if you are after timber we supply Bereco, again go to their website, not cheap but beautiful. I think I would work with them and just retro fit. paint outside same color as walls, to blend in.

Maybe not quite the same situation, but when we had new windows fitted 6 years ago during a big refurbishment the window company asked if we were planning to have external cladding. At the time we thought we would so they fitted extra deep external sills to allow for the depth of the cladding. In the end we couldn’t afford the cladding - so we have the deeper sills but it doesn’t look odd.
