patterned tiled stairs

Has anyone tiled their staircase at home, how has it turned out? I really fancy a patterned stairs, possibly continuing hallway tiles up them (fronts, keeping wood tops) but not sure how practical it is.

It doesn't sound practical on wooden stairs due to the movement of the wood. Could you paint the risers instead? Perhaps one hue getting lighter as it goes up for example?

It doesn’t sound very safe to me. I asked a flooring expert about putting laminate on my stairs. He quickly convinced me to stay with carpet.

Thanks all very much for your comments. I just looked at your link carolins for striped carpets, they are all fab but are ALL vertical. Has anyone ever seen horizontal ones? It would be a very expensive mistake to make if it didn't work out, especially here in Ireland as all home decor items are overpriced. Need to paint the dark stairwell too, no bannisters, just wall. Would love to be adventurous with colour but always seem to stick with the 'safe' neutral options.

I would try to find a carpet to make the darkest shade in the wallpaper pattern like a mushroom color. Cream white gets dirty and stairs are heavily trafficked.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Choose something that goes with the bedroom carpets. Personally I like I similar colour throughout the house for continuity. I would choose a neutral- perhaps a warm grey

I agree that it wouldn’t be a good idea to tile over wood as wood moves and the tiles could crack. However, following on from colourhappy’s example, maybe tile the risers or use tile stickers? Of course abroad many stairs are tiled but it’s usually over concrete stairs.

Sonia beat me to it. I'd also suggest self-adhesive stair riser decals. Lots of designs on Etsy including this one.
