Can we fix the wall/plaster ourselves?

Looking for advice on how to fix the wall around the vanity unit in our bathroom (we are in the UK so the wall is plaster). We had some work done on the bathrooms but our wall was left like this. My question is, is this something we can fix ourselves with sandpaper and a plaster repair kit (and painting) or will it look terrible? Particularly because the wall has some texure that we can't easily reproduce. Should we hire someone to just replaster the whole wall/bathroom? Hoping to avoid that as it's expensive, but would consider it.
